Is that a 1/4 inch plate chassis? Why that over 1/8 or even smaller

Its 3/16; and it was supplied stock from a generous sponsor. We might be able to go 1/8th. We've gone thicker and it was unnecessary, but we feel any thinner will be an unnecessary compromise with not a noticeable weight difference. Besides, we can cut larger lightening holes out with 3/16 than we would with a thinner gauge to offset the difference in weight. Good question.
