Question QUESTION OF THE WEEK!!! [01-06-01]

Hi all. You've all been waiting for this year's game eagerly... And there you have it, "zone zeal" for the 2002 FIRST robotics competition! I know there are a lot of threads talking about the game this year... But I just want to ask this question to see how people feel when the game was first revealed in front of their eyes... After all, it has been at least half a year of wait and million of threads of prediction... With that in mind, here is the question of the week...

QUESTION 12/23/01: How did you feel when they first lift up the curtain and reveal this year's game... And what's the best thing about it?

Have fun, and good luck with the next stressful 6 weeks...

-Ken Leung

I am soooooo scared.

A game doesn't come along like this every day, and I just keep using the analogy of a masterpiece painting.....so perfect, youre scared that you wont be able to truly get the artist's point so you stare at it and stare at it and think about it over and over in your head, coming up with endless ways of thinking about it.

This year, even though Im teamless, I dont know...I just cant sit back and watch. But, I want to make sure the team that I sit with these first few weeks gets the point, too...and works towards it as one unit. And I guess by being away from the team, I just am scared that won't happen, since looking in from the outside gives you a totally new perspective.

But that's all, hope I didnt get too personal or too rambling.

When the rules were stated, I was wondering how you can maximize the "3 times the loser's score". Actually I still am wondering that.

I am still shocked that Dean actually simplified the scoring...

I love the new game, I absolutely love it. Granted, the tasks are flat out much easier to do than last year's (except maybe a robot that tracks and automatically shoots baskets) but I don't think that that will make the competition any less exciting. Last year everyone came up with "game plans" but this year I simply think that that can't be done. Every match is going to be different.

~Tom Fairchild~, who's looking forward to the regionals, even though he hasn't started designing his robot!

Talking where is everything?

The first thing I thought when the curtain went up was "where is everything??" I was waiting for some big obstacle. lol..well, as we all know I was wrong. oh well. I think seeing what strategies everyone come up with is going to be very exciting..and i can't wait!!

they pretty much gave away the whole game before they lifted the curtain. and for some reason, the field looked a LOT bigger in the T-kats house when i was there. maybe i've just been away from a field for too long

Thumbs up

I'm walking the fence this year. I like the new game, sure... but I'm still liking say '99 better. But of course, one can never really put a judgement on a game for sure until you go and watch your first regional in action But I can say that when I was helping team 177 build their practice goal this weekend, I was shocked at its size, and particulary its weight! Going to make for some rather powerful robots I think.

Redeemed

Hello All,

My thought on the new game is that it should be very cool. Things are finally back to normal after the ringer we were all put through last year. I like this game because it has ties to 2000 and I thought that 2000 was one of the best FIRST games I've seen. The best things about this game are:

5. The fact that a teams goal zone and robot zone are on opposite ends of the field. I think this will require teams to do a lot of runing back and forth.

4. Your robot counts as 10 for the other team if you're in their robot zone. I hope to see lots or robots getting dragged kickin' and screamin' into the other teams robot zone....should make for some excitement.

3. Finals will return to the on the edge of your seat till the very last minute best 2 out of 3 format...the way FIRST eliminations were meant to be played.

2. The competition is 2 on 2. NOT 4 v. 0 thank god!!!!!

And the thing that I like the most about the 2002 FIRST Game...

1. THERE ARE NO TIME MULTIPLIERS!!!!

Justin, unless you count that the winners get 3X the loser scores than there are multipiers

I liked last years game, but I was just a small cog on a rookie team and didn't know anything about previous years games I also like root canals and paper cuts
I did breath a sigh of relief that there wasn't a bridge to cross.

Lightbulb The simplicity is deadly

If you think about it, the simplicity of the game is very deadly.

The way the game is set up, one robot doing the right thing at just the right time. Be it a rookie that can drive around can tip the balance of a game. 8 ft is what can seperate a win from a loss.

I foresee that this will be one of the more exciting games to watch. Especially during the last 15 seconds.

All I can say is talk with your alliance partners closely, this is certainly not something you can win by yourself.

you got it right Patrick!

i think those last 15 seconds will be the most interesting.

this game seems to have only a limited number of possibilities design wise, but i think we will always see those unique designs (rampbots etc last year)

this game is gonna be FUN!!

Kudos to that...

Interestingly easy competition... or is it.

Scoring easy yes, but I have a feeling the first minute will be tea time for the robots to get to know each other, not getting much done. 2 minutes can be a long time with no bonus multiplier for ending the game early.
