Substitue with TV remotes or the Wii Sensor Bar (not the remote but the sensor bar) and test your program. It's not a perfect replicate but it works.

Use a camera to identify the light sources on the Wii sensor bar (there's one on each side so tape over one side).

A quick follow up... We found a TV remote control that is detected by our IR sensor, so we have been able to put together an autonomous routine. Thanks to everyone for the suggestions!
