Re: Gangnam Style and Cotton Eyed Joe

I'm kind of partial to this one

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j6khLRcDgv4

I definitely agree the songs can get pretty overplayed, but FIRST has the official playlist and only those songs will get played at events.

When I was a student, we had the Cha-Cha slide, Macarena, and Cotton Eye Joe, and that was 12 years ago. I'm glad we've added at least two more songs to that list!

On another note, pun intended, go to the DJ and request a song. I have at the GTAW and the DJ is always willing as they are looking for input as well.

Even when all else fails, have fun as it will get better.

At a couple regionals, members of my team have returned from the DJ's station disappointed after the DJ told them, "I'm not taking requests." At some events the music is on a playlist that seems miles too short. I think all the scouts out there would love some variety.

Never ruins a good competition though!

Re: Gangnam Style and Cotton Eyed Joe

You know what my favorite part of this thread is? The fact the OP and other posters have specifically called out Gangnam Style, despite the fact it wasn't released until July of 2012. In other words, it's never been played at a FRC event before. That overplaying of Gangnam Style has been everywhere else but FRC.

That being said, anyone who doesn't anticipate it being in heavy rotation at upcoming FRC events is fooling themselves.

Coming from an Emcee's perspective on the field: The audio is largely controlled by the event staff and not the DJ. The DJ generally sets one audio output level (just clarifying, not quoting what you said). I would recommend that you have a representative talk to the Event Coordinator from Show Ready Events to help out with lowering the volume (you could also try the regional director). Getting sound right is an extremely difficult task to do especially in all areas of an arena where the audience/teams are sitting (but then again, the event staff is paid to make this sound as good as possible).

Speaking from the events that I do, it is true that the DJ (if your event even has one and not the DJ in a box thing) does have a set playlist of guidelines to follow, but there are always deviations of this. I always try to coordinate with the DJ to hold off on the majority of dancing songs until Saturday to "ramp" up the event. I have found from feedback from a few teams that this helps make the event more exciting and less drawn out from hearing the dance songs over and over again.

Point being: Talk to your event staff and volunteers who are responsible for making this happen. We are all here to give you, the audience the best experience that we can. Most people responsible for making this happen do not spend their work time on CD .

Re: Gangnam Style and Cotton Eyed Joe

If Gangnam does come out I just hope it is the NASA version. Wish I had the Youtube link.

As for the DJ's, as long as your request is tasteful and fits into the game, no real problem, or least that's been my experience.

2648 stopped Mainly Spirit so they could do a production of the whole team dancing to it.
It will be part of FIRST for all eternity.

As long as we never return to the year of Party in the USA every three songs, I'll put up with whatever else rolls down the pike!

Re: Gangnam Style and Cotton Eyed Joe

I guess I've been spoiled by Lone Star, which has always had an excellent musical selection, but at most out-of-state regionals, and at Champs, the music was really repetitive. I love Greyhound by SHM but it did not need to be played every 4 matches on Newton. The best playlists I've heard at regionals have a blend of all genres/song ages and never play the dance songs unless there's a delay. It may be part of the culture of FIRST to have the same really old song get played 20 times in a day, but that doesn't make it a good thing. I'm looking forward to the first time Gangnam Style gets played, but I'm really dreading the 300 times I know it will be played after that.

This many times over. I haven't been to nearly as many events as Koko, but I have acquired an immunity to the repetitive songs. Buckeye seems to have gotten better though...

...because of this. I'm almost certain that the Buckeye Regional committee decided the same thing. In 2010, Thursday it was chilled, laid back music almost all day. Friday got into more upbeat songs, but nothing too crazy. Saturday was full blown Cotton Eyed Joe and Chicken Dance. Even then, they didn't go overboard, if I recall correctly.

I don't mind the songs themselves. But FIRST should strongly advise the DJs and Regional Directors to create a lengthy playlist (or playlists for each day).

Re: Gangnam Style and Cotton Eyed Joe

The thing I find amusing is that when I think of FRC event music the first song that comes to mind is Sandstorm by Darude. What makes Sandstorm so special that it gets ignored as an overplayed song?
