Question Sensing between Serins

Depending on the speed of the loop and the speed of the robot it seems all to easy for the sensors to go from not seeing anything, to seeing something, to not seeing it again within a single cycle where the robot controller wouldn't see it because it happened between the serout and serin. Is there any way to check the sensors durring a loop without doing a full serin?
