Since I'm getting 400 of these comments, I'll just address this here
We don't have a pneumatic riveter and are quite low-budget. Our awesome machining sponsor also supplies materials. Yes rivets would be so much lighter, but where we are right now we may even have to weigh the drivetrain down. So it wasn't really a design issue. We had the nuts and bolts on hand so we used them.
tl;dr totally agree, but there was no need and we had bolts already.
So remember, we may be envious of teams who can do water jet cutting and has every possible monetary and engineering advantage, but there are many more people who are envious of every team who has a chance to compete. - Rombus [more]
