Chairman's Award Presentation Questions

Hey CD! My team is going to the Pine Tree Regional in Maine next weekend, and I will be part of the Chairman's award presentation group for the first time (as will the other presenters from my team). I just have a few questions about how the presentation goes. If someone can answer my questions directly or send me a link to a place with the answers I would be very appreciative.

How long do we get to present?
Do we get any set up time?
Does our video go into our presentation time, or do they look at it separately?
Is it more of a Q&A or straight on presentation?
What are some things not in the essay that they will want to know?
Thanks! Jay

Re: Chairman's Award Presentation Questions

Much of this is covered in the manual, so be sure to read that section

1) 5 minutes of presentation, 5 minutes of Q&A with the judges
2) No setup time. Assume the clock starts when you walk in.
3) The Video is officially not part of the judging process. Some teams choose to show it during their presentation, some do not.
4) See above - 50/50
5) I don't know, I'm not on your team

Edit: you may find the Talking to Judges call posted here very useful. Notes are here.

I'd send you a link for these, but you should have the Manual linked already.

Admittedly, this isn't the Game Manual, it's the Administrative Manual, Section 6.4.3.4, which gives the following answers:

5 minute presentation (including setup), up to 5 minutes Q&A.
Video if you choose to show it is in presentation time. However, you do have to give the judges the DVD, which will allow them to view it separately.

Re: Chairman's Award Presentation Questions

The first 5 minutes is whatever you want to say, you're presenting information about the team. You could just cover what's in the essay and/or add additional information that you think is important. After that, the judges will ask questions to clarify the information you just gave them, and to hear more about anything they found interesting or important.

Oddly enough, when we presented this year, they started the timer after we had set up. This might have been attached to the fact that they had set out chairs and we were in a small roof (I think it was some sort of locker room), and we had to move them to set up our presentation board. Not that we needed the time-- we had practiced with setup and regularly came in ~30 seconds under. Still a good rule to go by though. I think our judges were a bit tired after an entire day of listening to presenters.

Re: Chairman's Award Presentation Questions

You have 5 minutes to get the judges excited about your team. use it well. And the best advice is...practice. And more practice. Give the presentation to someone who doesn't know much about your team and let them ask questions and give feedback. Make sure you know the answers to any questions the judges might ask.

It doesn't hurt to give them a handout so they will remember you better when they deliberate.
