I included Michigan in the list because I knew it had almost as many teams as California, I would still be willing to bet though that Cali has 2x as many teams as most other states. I don't have the stats on this so I was curious if you did.

I got mine off of the FIRST website. I know that Florida has 76 so...lol Cali is quite a bit more expansive in teams than us. Florida probably wont get a district model till FIRST regulates every state into its own district lol

What's worse, if you look at distributions of teams in Florida they are really segmented. Or at least that's how it appeared to me. (It's also been about a year since I checked into it)

In Michigan we have a heavy concentration in SE Michigan and a heavy smattering on the west coast of the state. But overall they are heavily concentrated in those two areas with SE being far more heavily populated (I grew up with no less than 3 FRC teams within 20 minutes of my house, 27, 33, and 68. And I lived on the outskirts of the suburbs, north 5 miles was farmland and almost 0 cell signal). This lent itself to districts quite easily as it meant most teams don't have travel costs other than gas for the family van.

Cali is in a different boat as far as distribution. It's worth looking into if you are hoping for districts in your area. Distributions and densities do matter otherwise you won't be saving a whole lot on travel costs (and in some cases, you spend more). Districts are NOT a magic bullet to solve all the FIRST problems. They work in certain areas due to peculiarities in their geography, population density, team density, and sponsor density.

Re: District Champion Playoff for Fun

Is California going to districts next year? Any other regions?

I've been told from multiple sources the Northwest is going to districts next year. I'm very excited about it, our region has grown a lot in the past few years and I'm hoping it'll help push us further and be more competitive. If anyone has more information about it they'd like to share, I'd be interested to know.
