Thumbs up 2003- the closest to a "battleBot" that FIRST has made the this

there is still team work and everything that comes with it but, this is by far the closest to a battlebot.... thats why they said "BUILD TO ENDURE" they want to see some robots smash each other.......... by the way, i'm new here, this is my 4th year with my team GFORCE from the Bronx......

thats why they said "BUILD TO ENDURE"
Actually almost anything you build should be built to endure unless it's a single use device. First isn't that gentle. Your robot should be able to rough shocks and be able to push but that is really all. There will always be some agressiveness in the competitions ie. king of the hill, pushing matches but it still isn't on the level of battlebots.

Not to start ANOTHER war about BB vs. FIRST, but from what it sounds like what you are saying, it seems like FIRST does seems to be more on competivie and contact bots, there is still a goal that isn't to kill, which I like.

FIRST will never go towards BB with this event for 2 reasons, 1 is Highschool related and 2 , i thought FIRST was already involved with BB so they got no need in turning this into another BB. This year's event WILL b brutal, and FIRST knows it, thats why I say is the closest to BB yet.

Of course there's going to be contact. It's like that when people are battling for the same things. Remember two years ago? Wasn't that exilerating...ehh I like the feeling of smashing into something else...but I don't want to destroy it with a saw I don't think there would be much fun or major competition without hitting hard. It never will be BB, though.

They've said to build your robot to endure for every year I've been in this program (3). From what I understand, in previous years robots were even allowed to tip other robots over, and thus robots then had to "endure" as well. There is a big difference between building a robot to withstand an impact at full ramming speed and building a robot to endure high-speed swinging hammers and kill saws. I definately don't see FIRST being any closer to battlebots this year than last, so I think you're making a mountain out of a molehill.

Battle Bots and FIRST

Here we go.... Another Battle Bots and FIRST thread.....of course FIRST is going to say make your bot so that it can "endure", a lot of thing.... Competition is Competition...there is going to be a little shoving here and there! I do Battle Bots and FIRST, as a joke my FIRST team mates (who also participate in Battle Bots) came up with the idea that we should make a spinner or a pneumatic flipper to throw the boxes around! lol

Last year was certainly the dullest game, strategy wise, and viewing wise...For the first time, I was bored to death spectating the game- it was just robots crashing into eachother. - whoever had the most goals won (90% of the time).

If anything, this is a little less like Battlebots than last year, although I liked 4-0 the best - that was really exciting I think, and drew people togther, because you wanted that bridge to balance.

srawls: I've been in this 4 years and i don't recall any event in which FIRST allows people to tip robots over, also, they always say build to endure but in this one they are really STRESSING it, TRUST me, i've been the driver for my team for 3 years in a row, i know the past events, and I know this one, and for this one, everybody is going for pushing power, add that pushing power to the LESS time limit, and that will equal speed. Put speed + pushing power+ less time and that will = (equal) brutallity.....

FIRST is nothing like Battlebots, as future/present engineers we should want to create not destroy... that seems to be the attitude most FIRST teams have anyway, and although mishaps happen, the teams that caused them are usually the first ones offering a hand in the repairs.

FIRST = Something bigger than robot destruction

There is nothing wrong with Battle Bots.... Everyone thinks its just "out to destroy robots" ya that might be the game. Yet there is so much more behind it....the designing process, the building, the team work, the communication, the pits! Its a lot more then just what you see in 30 mins on TV. A lot of the people that participate in the Battles Bots are some of the nicest people I have ever met. In the PITS its the same atmosphere as in FIRST. You go to a person and ask them for help and they are willing to aid you in any way that they can! You can judge something just by what you see!

I am not saying that Battlebots is bad or anything, sorry if I came off attacking it. I was just commenting that I personally like FIRST better because it fits my style of competition better

Obviously there is going to be collisions, and alot of pushing on top of the ramp this is no different than any other year when it comes to the strength of the bots, except for 2001 when it was all freindly. People don't say that cars are made for bashing because they are built to withstand a crash. It's protection in a car and protection for your bot. I doubt anyone will coat there bot in 1/2 inch steel plate like on battle bots for armour or a 5000rpm disk as a weapon, so stop making references to battlebots.
