Re: Championships: Live Thoughts and Updates

Hey does anyone remember what match Andy Baker MC'd on Galileo and if it was with 610 1477 and 1241 in it. If so he picked to MC the match with a world champ twice in a row

Awesome set of matches on Einstein, and a great advert for the program.
Congrats to 610, 1241 & 1477

I'm a bit late replying but the FMS twitter feed shows that 6 of the 20 teleop scores were not multiples of 3.

(One of those is the erroneous score from SF2-2, but assuming the 54pt mistake was in teleop, the corrected score would still not be a multiple of 3)

Re: Championships: Live Thoughts and Updates

That was fantastic!
I'm a rookie, and this was my first time watching the championships live. 610, 1477, and 1241 were so amazing. I had no idea alliances could work together so seamlessly. Also, the number of people at the event was stunning.

Special congrats to all the foreign teams for coming this far, especially 2630: The Thunderbolts! I met them at the D.C. Regional when I accidentally stumbled into their pit, and they were, by far, the most enthusiastic team there. I'm so proud of them for making it into the quarterfinals. (Also, I'm stoked for Team 422: The Mech Tech Dragons! Their 'burning ambition' really paid off, getting off the wait-list and then coming in 20th for the Galileo Division? AWESOME! Blaze it, Dragons!)

IIRC Andy Baker MC a semifinal match 1.1 in which 1114 and 118 won not 1477

Re: Championships: Live Thoughts and Updates

I dont think anyone predicted what happened on einstein from happening. I dont think anyone predicted the right alliances that were on einstein. What a year. Lots of upsets, but it's not how well your bot does, it is what you gained from it all.

2/3 Canadian FRC World Champions

Congratulations 610 + 1241 + 1477. I can't believe Galileo let that alliance form, they were beastly. I am blown away by the drivers skills on these teams. Especially 610, who were really really good right at the beginning of the season. There were many robots mechanically similar to these bots and I think that the drivers really made the difference for this world champion alliance.

Also, it made me really happy that the world champions are Canadian, even though, unfortunately, neither 1114 and 2056 made it to Einstein.

Re: Championships: Live Thoughts and Updates

Not-live thoughts:

FIRST: Teams, please instruct your non-mentor parents to follow rules as well.

Telling me "go to hell" for my students sitting in a seat that, by rules stated in the 2013 Administrative Manual Section 14.2 cannot be saved. It contributed to a poor performance on the field when I had to tell them to just brush it off and get in queue for the first match on Saturday. There was very limited seating for Galileo and my team did the hard work of waking up at 6 AM to make it to the dome by 7. If you want to save seats, have a team that is well-disciplined enough to show up before the doors open. Sorry if I sound like a jerk, but it left a sour taste in my mouth and negatively affected my kids. I know we all want to see a team we support do well, but things like that can damage team reputation. I actively try to manage the discipline of the students at competition to prevent negative behavior and I know some things slip through the cracks, but please take time to read the rules, remember who you represent, and remember why we're all here.

Teams that let 610 fall to middle second pick made a strategic error dwarfing letting 16 slip down in 2012. Them making second pick was also surprising, seeing as they weren't showing the level of consistency I personally like in 2nd picks. What a steal.

I am not surprised by Einstein that much. I don't want to say it was a classic "brains vs. brawn" matchup since everyone built strong robots to execute a smart strategy, but Archimedes' offensive powerhouses were shut down by woefully under-appreciated strategists on Galileo that capitalized on all the shots FCS bots kept missing. In my unofficial crusade against the full-court shooter this season, I was also not that shocked to see Galileo winning the whole thing without a dedicated FCS. A jack of all trades robot is not a wise decision, but building dedicated FCS robots really box in strategic flexibility of your alliance and allow the opponents to predict movements, accuracy, and point counts. Give away too many secrets and the other guys come out without much surprise.

Speaking of surprise, 1477 got hot at the right time. They honestly were fumbling about most of competition, allowing 422 to win earlier, but while 422's robot managed to have its performance to bounce from mediocre (36 points) to good (50) to terrible (6?!) to great (70), T-squared just got better and better.

We tried to remain calm while Andy Baker inspected the robot and then fanboy-d out in private after he gave the electrical lead on the team a shirt. He was supposed to trade with you, Andy, but if he didn't deliver there could be a trade set up for IRI (plz let us in).

Dean's List ceremony was great, but my legs were mad that they had to stand for so long. Could we get chairs next time? Dean, Will.I.Am, and the other speakers were so absolutely fantastic and candid at the event I forgot why we were there. I was really shocked by how absolutely fantastic will.i.am was when he spoke at Dean's List. If you weren't sold on him after that, I don't know what else you need. It's not a sell-out involving him. It's a very clear catalyst in the effort to slowly sneak FIRST into pop-culture, and the guy just plain gets it.

I was also surprised that it seems there is a shift in the way HQ perceives FRC. I felt like HQ was going to endlessly keep their major league competitive division languishing in "science fair" mode forever, but it is very clear that the current urgent mission for Dean and the powers-that-be that FIRST in 10 years will dwarf what it is right now. They want to make the competition more competitive, they want more "normal people" to not just understand it, but become passionate fans of it like any other sport, and they can feel the program teetering on the edge of breaking into something far bigger than what it is right now. After I invited people to an event the last two years and saw how quickly they went from begrudgingly interested to overly enthusiastic because of how great the game was to watch, it became clear to me how much bigger it's about to be.

It did not. The match he MC'd was Galileo's #1 alliance (118, 1114, 4039) against the #8 alliance (245, 27, 1732).

Was it just me, or did 3476 have trouble scoring those last disks in the 3-point goal because the goal was overflowing?
I was thinking on those lines as well. Actually, the biggest contributor to our below-average accuracy on Einstein relates to the shiny unused disks- we had to readjust backwards about two feet from when we were using the used disks. But again, they all could have gone in and we would have won the match. Or 303 could have happened to pick different battery. Or in other words,... Einstein.

At first I was suspicious, but I do believe he's earnestly trying. Listen to his song Geekin' on the #willpower album, it's possible to think that at least some of the themes are inspired by his participation and evangelism of FIRST.
