We're ahead, but our robot is simple
I am now working with a new team, 1062 in Celebration, Florida, and the "bolt-together" drive train has been a very good thing for us. Since we are a first year team, we have no previous years' robots to drive, so we just assembled a very simple machine so our potential drivers could start practicing.
If you build simple, you can avoid being "behind," but you are compromising your capabilities. The bolt-together drive train works, but it will put as at a major disadvantage compared to what my old team, TechnoKats, and others will come up with. Next year, Team 1062 will have something more exotic, but we may well be behind where we'd like to be three weeks after kickoff.
