IRI has always done it 1-8, 1-8, 8-1. Normally it's 1-8 then 8-1.

The serpentine draft is not thought of highly by many IRI-caliber teams.

Paul, Karthik, and several others have posted extensively on this topic.

I believe in intuition and inspiration. Imagination is more important than knowledge. For knowledge is limited, whereas imagination embraces the entire world, stimulating progress, giving birth to evolution. It is, strictly speaking, a real factor in scientific research.

Additionally with the depth of IRI, being the 8th seed could be better than the first seed, getting picks 8 and 9 back to back. Both of these robots are guaranteed to be fantastic. By the time you get to pick 16 the talent will drop off a little bit (but not much). The first seed needs the ability to form the best alliance, and serpentine doesn't work for IRI in that regard.

Does anyone know who's MCing IRI this year? Unfortunately, I heard Paul wasn't asked back.

I'm working on finding housing. I was wondering when you guys are going to release a draft schedule soonish, or can I safely assume it's basically gonna be the same schedule (Thursday load-in and Friday & Saturday Robot Rounds & Stuff) as last year?

It appears teams geographically near to the tournament were given preference over other teams -- does anyone know why this is?

Indiana teams get preferential treatment because IRI is in/from Indiana, but past that really no one gets preferential treatment; except the previous year's winners because they get an auto-invite.

Re: IRI Rules and Team Invitation List

Team 295 was passed over in the application process, team 2451 and team 706 were not. Both are relatively geographically near to IRI (but not in IN), and while I'm sure they're both absolutely fantastic teams, objectively we did have a bit of a better season than them (IMHO).

Those were just two examples that caught my eye, I really don't want to seem like I'm calling them out. Again, I'm sure they're both really great teams.

On a different note, is there any reason that IN teams are given preference? For an event as prestigious and selective as IRI, that doesn't really make sense to me.

Because it's the Indiana Robotics Invitation and they would like Indiana teams there for the most part.
If you have issues with the selection process you should probably contact Chris Fultz about it.

It's their party, they can invite who they want. I remember our first year of being invited, the invite was almost a good as actually going. If I was an Indiana team that didn't go to St. Louis, a chance to face the Einstein teams would be very, very cool.

The years that I've gone to IRI and Paul C has been the MC for the draft, he's done a great presentation on why the serpentine draft is the greatest travesty of all time. VEX has learned from that, we do the selection "correctly".

The Median for IRI appears to be about 60.... If it follows the same trend, we could see average scores of 180 points... This will get very very interesting....
I would be highly skeptical of that, even ignoring my skepticism of OPR as a robot metric. Even if all teams were capable of repeating (or building on) their peak performance, once we hit this level of competition their are overlaps in the points scored between robots. Namely autonomous discs (only one 7-disc scorer per alliance), climbing points (only one "inside" climber per alliance), and potentially even the 45-disc limit (especially when FCS are involved).

I'd be highly skeptical of an average score that high for that reason alone, but add in fact that some teams will have new drivers/key personnel, many machines are worked past their limit and will suffer issues, and general regression towards the mean (given it was peak performance that was being used) and I think it's almost certain we see lower average scores than 180.

There used to be a significant "Indiana team" bonus when trying to determine the invitees. With the advent of C.A.G.E., that no longer needs to be a large part of the decision.

Nobody who applied was "passed over". Everyone was run through the same formula to find the teams to be invited. Not all of that formula is performance-based, by the way. There's a bit of "what special quality does this team bring to IRI?" involved.

IRI has its roots as a local off-season for nearby teams to have fun at. For a long time, it was the only chance for many Indiana teams to attend a summer competition. It wasn't always a "best of the best" event.

Alas, that isn't true. There isn't room for everyone who is wanted, so there has to be a cutoff somewhere.

Is it possible to see who responded yes or no to attending since we are passed may 31st? Just curious.
