Re: Talons/roboRIO - Waterproof?

If you mean "waterproof" as in you can operate them underwater, without putting them in a waterproof compartment, NO, they are not waterproof.

They are slightly water resistant, meaning that they probably will still work if you accidentally splash a little bit of water on them.

wouldn't they would be waterproof in 100% distilled water or mineral oil?

This is brilliant!!!

Everyone spends so much time imagining water games. Before that ever happens though, FRC will probably incorporate some non-conductive liquid.

Some options:
de-ionized water
mineral oil
vegetable oil
milk
melted wax
syrup

Re: Talons/roboRIO - Waterproof?

If the 2015 game is played in a swimming pool of milk, we would be fools not to call the control system the oRIO.

Very funny, very funny.

in case you missed the joke

The problem is that most of these substances become contaminated easily. Yes, of course in DI water there would be no shorting, but imagine 2 days later after everyone's greasy gearboxes have churned through the water for eighty-something matches. It would not stay pure for long.

Also, I think a compressor would have a physics-related malfunction while running in any kind of liquid immersion.

You're forgetting the simple mantra of successful robots.

Problem physics?

Talking Re: Talons/roboRIO - Waterproof?

Kind of a random post:
So, does that mean that I can cool my overclocked quadcopter motors by submersing then in milk? The motors are two black pieces stacked atop a white core, making it an oreo. That's a flying snack!

Anyways, a use of nonconductive liquids would to passively cool motor controllers internally!

Has anyone tried using melted iron as a liquid? The robot would probably last long like that!

Anyways, back on topic, just use de-ionized water as water!

Re: Talons/roboRIO - Waterproof?

Yash, make sure your team signs up for NURC. They changed the schedule, game will be announced around New Years, and will take place in October. You'll learn more about water and electronics than you ever wanted to know

I will query my coach and find out if he is interested. Do you have a link to their homepage?
https://google.com/search?q=nurc returns a lot of different underwater robotics/research facilities/other stuff, so it is hard to find out which one you are talking about!

Cool Re: Talons/roboRIO - Waterproof?

Cool! I shall query my robotics mentor if he will allow it. However, my only concern is the amount of time we waste. We haven't succeeded in anything big this year, yet! I do not think our team has enough time or motivation to do this!

However, me being optimistic, I'm sure that we will join, even if it isn't this year

Re: Talons/roboRIO - Waterproof?

Computers used to be submerged in DI water for cooling. You could probably do the same for a Talon. Doesn't make them water proof in the conventional sense. Any water the robot is likely to be exposed to will be conductive enough to short exposed electronics.
