I bring my digital camera (digi rules...few hundred pics a day...muah), a bottle for water, and my LART (Luser Attitude Readjustment tool...when those pesky freshman get out of hand...it's a 5lb painted sledge.) and I brought my cdplayer once but that was just a pain...didn't use it and almost lost it. It's recommended that you don't bring stuff you can lose into the competition. If it fits in a pocket or is almost impossible to misplace (big yellow and blue hammer...not going to lose that  ). CD players are generally a bad idea, IMO.
