Post Rules summary

Here's a rough game/rules outline I prepared for my team to help anyone get started on "understanding aerial assist." Hope it helps! If you see any glaring holes in the document please point it out, thanks!

Summary of the Game Manual source: http://frc-manual.usfirst.org/upload...1388857202.pdf read it if you can, it's not that bad!
The Arena
Not too much to say about the arena, the videos have it all.
-"8" goals. 2 high ones, 3 on each of the two lower boxes.
-Your alliance station is on the opposite side of the field as your zone.
-There are TVs that give you info on assists
-Goals light up 1/3 of the way for one assist, 2/3 of the way for two, and all the way for three
-Hot goals light up yellow
-There are 4 reflective tape marking on each side of the field. The two horizontal upper ones only face you when the goal above them is hot. The two vertical inner ones are always there.

The Game
-10s of autonomous, 2m20s of play
-Foul is a 20 point deduction, Technical foul is a 50 point deduction.
--You get fouls from rule violations
-Cycle: A pedestal with the alliance's ball lights up, you get it, score it, repeat. (There is only one ball at a time)
--The field crew chases the scored balls
--Out of bounds balls are given to the alliance's nearest human player
--don't grab a ball until the pedestal is lit
-Assists work like this: Everywhere the ball was and everyone who possessed it is recorded.
--They work assists out for maximum points
--Example: Team 1 gets the ball in red and moves to white. They pass it to team 2 who is in white. Team 2 passes it to 3 who is in white and team 3 move to blue and scores. There would be 3 assists. 1 would get
-credited for an assist in red, 2 in white, and 3 in blue.
-Points
--hot goals are outlined with lights and give a 5 point bonus
--2 assists is a 10 point bonus, 3 assists is a 30 point bonus
--throwing over truss is 10 points, catches are 10 points
--autonomous
---gives a 5 point bonus to making it in the goal.
---gives 5 points for moving into your zone at the start of a match
---does not give points for assists, catches, or truss throws
---still gives 5 point bonus for hot goals
-Only 1 coach, 2 drivers, and 1 human player are allowed in the arena during the match
-Cannot possess other alliance's ball
--Possession: carrying, herding, launching, or trapping
-Making others break rules is not allowed
-You can't cross past the truss/touch opponent robots duting autonomous
-No blockades, no robot-tipping or hurting
-Deliberate contact with an opponent robot on or inside its frame perimeter is not allowed. Bumper-to-bumper contact is okay.

The Robot
Size limits:
-112 inch perimeter if you wrapped tape around the frame
-5 foot height
--If touching goalie carpet, no height limit as long as everything above 5 feet is in an imaginary 6 inch diameter vertical cylinder
-120 lbs, not including battery and bumpers
-Can extend 20 inches beyond frame in-game but not in the starting configuration
Safety: Has to be safe
Budget:
-Total not including Kit of Parts(KOP) must be less than $4000
-No individual Component can cost more than $400
Bumpers:
-Must go 8 inches out
-Must cover all outer corners
-Bumpers have to cover our frame perimeter, meaning a U shaped robot has bumpers over its gap (and that gap actually can't be greater than 8 inches)
-Other random rules. 2 sets of bumpers (one red, one blue). Must be under 20 pounds. Team numbers on them. etc.
Lists of allowed motors, actuators, circuits

The Tournament
-You have to wear goggles
-You can't make wifi hotspots
-You have to get your robot inspected
-3 rounds: Practice, Qualifying, and Elimination
-Practice is Practice
-Qualifying is where everybody goes
-Elimination is where the top 8 teams vye for the championship
-Fouls lose you lots of points
-Flags: Red and Yellow. You get them on repeated or severe rule violations.
-Red disqualifies you, yellow is more of a warning.
-2 yellows means you get a red.

The line in bold is incorrect. The height limit (outside of the GOALIE zone) is 5 feet, or 60 inches. Showing up with a 6' high robot would be a tragic mistake.

-the ROBOT height may not exceed 60 in., except as allowed by G23.
-Any extension above 60 in. may not exceed a 6 in. diameter vertical cylinder (see Figure 4-3 and Figure 4-4 for examples), per G23.
Other than that, Great summary!

Re: Rules summary

The field crew chases balls that have been scored. Your human player is focused on theball in play.

I'd put the hot goal lights under autonomous points (they imply teleop)

Something you could add that I might add to my rules quiz: out of bounds balls are given to the alliance's nearest human player.

Great summary!

Re: Rules summary

What's the rule citation for, "-No deliberate collision with opponent robots"?

That would seem to preclude any sort of defense!

2.2.4 The VISION TARGETS
The dynamic VISION TARGET is horizontal and begins 5 ft. 8 in. above the FIELD carpet, is centered over the LOW GOAL, and consists of a panel with one (1) 4 in. wide, 1 ft. 11 ½ in. long strip of retro-reflective material (3M 8830 Silver Marking Film) adhered horizontally along the length of the panel with a 2 in. black ABS plastic border surrounding the retro-reflective material. The dynamic VISION TARGET is actuated to show the retro-reflective material when its corresponding HIGH and LOW GOAL are HOT.
I think this is backwards, the "Vertical" reference about dynamic targets refers to its rotated state (i.e. pointed outwards with retro tape showing).

Nice summary! I will be sharing it with my team

Re: Rules summary

Apart from what the other posters have mentioned, not bad.

I just don't see the need for a summary. The rules are not THAT boring of a read. Just read them. Then you don't have any issues of your summary having a bad interpretation.

That was a bit of a misinterpretation of G28:
Quote:
Deliberate or damaging contact with an opponent ROBOT on or inside its FRAME PERIMETER is not allowed.
I have now changed that part to "No deliberate past-or-on-bumper collision with opponent robots"

That still sounds like bumper-to-bumper contact isn't allowed! I think as a summary, "no non-bumper contact with other robots on or inside their frame perimeter" works better.

Whoops, that was definitely still worded poorly! I think my newest revision fixes it....
