Windows 8 -- Reinstall failure
There was an issue wherein somebody installing WRWB (the first time) on a windows 8 laptop accidentally ran WB 3.0.1 first, so we tried to uninstall it.
It did not uninstall properly (we used the un/installer provided in the mtool folder inside the maintenance folder of C:\WindRiver). Now, when we try to re-install WorkBench 3.0, it fails at start with a "an exception occurred during installation" dialog, and recommends a place to look. Unfortunately, the location the log is supposed to be saved at does not exist (nor can we find its analogue) because it references the "C:\Documents and Settings\" location only provided in Windows XP. To recap: 1) Workbench 3.0.1 uninstall failure 2) Workbench 3.0.1 installation fails 3) Cannot find log which failed installation says contains error messages because of outdated naming convention. What can we do to solve this problem? It is causing a considerable amount of agony. |

The log is likely relative to the Users folder (Docs and Settings in XP, User); if it isn't then try creating a Documents and Settings folder to give it a place to write to.
However, you absolutely need to install 3.0.1 first no matter what OS, then you use the second disc to patch to 3.3.1 for Non-XP32 bit systems. But, to answer your direct question. I would first try removing the C:\Windriver directory completely. I think this is all you need to do, I don't think anything in the registry would cause you trouble for reinstalling. We've already tried blowing away the WindRiver folder several times now.
Eventually, we just copied the WindRiver folder from a working machine, dropped it onto his laptop, and were able to successfully build and deploy code. My team is heavily anticipating the roboRIO for 2015 and the presumed new build tools that come with it. |

I had the exact same problem. I was able to get it to work by running the installer in Windows 7 compatibility mode, though it may have taken a few tries.
