Safety Captain purpose?
We have a student that wants to know what her true purpose is as "Safety Captain." Sadly, other that than the FRC safety manual we have little more info as to what to tell her. We have just used this position in the past as the safety glasses, and safe practices cop, but there is surely more to it that that. Please enlighten...

Re: Safety Captain purpose?
Usually (at least in MAR) they'll have some sort of informal 'judge interview'-esque discussion with the UL Safety Advisors(green polo shirts) as well as attending a safety captain meeting, usually in regards to specific event safety requirements(both general FIRST ones, as well as sometimes related specifically to the venue).
Other than that, their purpose is to promote the safety culture within FIRST, as well as ensuring safety is followed |

Re: Safety Captain purpose?
Not sure if this is specifically in the manual, but our safety captain has also been responsible for ensuring that the pit area at competitions is in compliance with all safety rules and regulations, as well as keeping safety equipment well maintained.
At home, they run yearly safety training as well as maintaining our first aid kits and doing regular reviews of safety practices. Since this is basically all that student does, this workload isn't excessive. |

Re: Safety Captain purpose?
I posted this last year and may be some help. The point is Safety Captain can be keeping the pit clean to far more. Look at different programs and decide what will work for you.
Re: Safety in the workshop As a Safety Advisor for 5+ years I have looked at many programs. All of the teams that have won Safety at west coast regionals have good programs and will send you theirs. So will my team 192. Look at several different ones and you will find things to make a safety program that you want. A safety program can be from a simple shop safety to a program the would work for a factory and pass OSHA. Different teams have different needs and you need to fined what will fit your team. Ours gets check out by risk management lawyers almost every year and we have to satisfy them or we do not operate. |

Re: Safety Captain purpose?
Our Safety Captains are in charge of maintaining safe practices in everything we do. They do workshop training on all of the machines. They do safety briefings 2-3 times per season to the whole team. They schedule First Aid and other Safety training for the team. They maintain our safety equipment (glasses, hearing protection, face protection, lifting belts, etc etc)
It is their job to take incident reports if an accident occurs. They keep the team safe. At events they continue to be the eyes of our safety program. They look for hazards that may arise and try to head off any issues. They do talk to judges but we want them to be a vital and integral part of the team. They are really important to us. Often in the heat of competition, the pit crew will have to move quickly and sometimes they may not have the best judgement when they are rushed. The safety captain is there to put them back in a safe situation and remind them about what they are doing. |
