There is no universal best way.

Depends on the drivers, the drivetrain, and your game strategy.

Re: Driving????????????

We used to drive standard tank-style (left joystick=left side of drivetrain, right joystick=right side of drivetrain) but last year we tried the FPS- style of drive, in which the right joystick is purely forward/backwards motin and the left joystick is steering, spinning, etc. Our driver, who plays a lot of FPS video games, said that this style was intuitive to him and gave him excellent control. This method also makes it easier to drive straight and to spin in place. (We use the two joysticks on logitech gamepad controllers to drive.) Of course it also depends on your drivetrain. If you have a meccanum or swerve drive the controlls will be different.

The best drivetrain is the one that meets your requirements.

In what sense is the latter more FPS than the former?

In this context, FPS is referring to first-person shooter videogame style controls, where one joystick (or hand on the keyboard) controls translation (in the case of a normal "tank drive" setup, just throttle), and another joystick (or mouse hand) handles aiming (turning in this context)

FPS meaning First Person Shooter. In that genre of games one stick on the controller is forward-backward movement and the other is spin - similar to the arcade style joystick setup for driving.

You seem to be implying here that video games which do not use one joystick for forward/reverse and a second joystick for rotation are not in the FPS genre. Was that your intention?

Re: Driving????????????

As far as control schemes, I would consider using a gamepad with GTA-style control where the right trigger is forward, and the left trigger is backward, and the left stick is turning. This frees the driver up to be able to use their pointer fingers on the bumpers and their right thumb on the a, b, x, y buttons.

I mean, if one really wanted to, they could do the same by driving with their thumbs, pointer fingers on the bumpers, and middle for the triggers. (Am I the only one who occasionally plays games like that?)

Re: Driving????????????

I believe our team is doing something like what Joseph said. At this point, our team is planning on doing it so that the left joystick of an xbox controller goes forward and back, and the left stick controls turning, we did it this way because it seemed a little difficult with our drive base to go perfectly straight with tank drive (left joystick controlling left side and right joystick controlling right side)

Well, you are right. Control mapping is usually not set in stone. The style of control most people refer to when saying "FPS controls" is that. Not that it is the only way, it is just colloquial.

If my team is in California, and I am building a mecanum bot this year, I am allowed to say I have a "West Coast Drive" given the vague definitions of the words. But, if I told anybody "my bot is West Coast Drive" they would automatically assume something other than mecanum.

By any stretch of the definition, mecanum drivetrains are not West Coast Drives.
