Use something with a reasonably high coefficient of friction, such as wheel tread. But it also helps if there's a lot of normal force...which requires that you be pushing the ball against something. The floor is handy to push against. Air is not so effective (in other words, have a roller above the ball, not against the side of it)

We used the soles of some old shoes back in 2008 attached to the tips of a claw to grip the ball back in 2008.

For the various games using balls that we've been involved in since we started I've been a big fan of the rubber material that is used to stop area rugs from moving on floors. Small zip ties work well to secure it to whatever your mechanism is.

Heck, we even made a conveyor belt out of it for our harvester in 2006
