As a recent high-school graduate I found this interesting; maybe you will too. Due to the snow day today, FRC Team 1676 (The Pascack Pi-oneers)'s high school district, the Pascack Valley Regional High School District, instead had their first-ever "Virtual Learning Day," where the district's 2,000 students use their school-issued Mac laptops to learn from teachers' lessons online. Here's the letter the superintendent sent out to the parents with more information:
Quote:
The principals of the two schools (Pascack Valley High School and Pascack Hills High School) are posting updates via their Twitter and Facebook accounts, and so far things to seem to be working well, though there are some slight school email server issues that are being worked out. Before this "virtual school day," the Pascack Valley Regional High School District already lost 2 or 3 school days due to snow. Fox 5 News also did a brief video segment on the "virtual school day" yesterday, featuring a bit of Team 1676, which can be viewed here: http://www.myfoxny.com/video?autoStart=true&topVideoCatNo=default&clipId= 9835028 Note: The two high schools are Pascack Valley and Pascack Hills, not Pascack High So, what do you think about this idea? Do you think it can/should be implemented elsewhere? Should it count as an actual school day? |

Re: Snow Day = "Virtual School Day"
What kind of assignments have been given? Are they appropriate for the standard class period? Do you need to learn new material or just review and practice existing material? Does it align with what you might have been doing had you been in class?

Assignments are something like "watch this video snip" (made by the teacher on Wednesday) "and complete this assignment", or along the lines of homework but with research first. Generally new material. Aligns with current class, just a virtualization of what would have been covered in class that day. They even have to check in with teachers online, but generally they can structure their day as they wish. A definite start time, some checks to verify engagement, and definite things to get done...just not on a specific timeline. |

Blah. Snow days are nature-induced days off made for relaxing and goofing off, and they're part of growing up.

Re: Snow Day = "Virtual School Day"
I think this is a great idea in theory for a traditional high school to pursue and have in their back pocket for snow days. This would also allow for students with illnesses that are either contagious or serious to complete assignments, such as mono or strep. It would also allow for suspended students to continue with assignments in a way that could immediately be graded and save from someone having to bring it to the student or a parent pickup up the assignments.
Virtual school already exists and will be an option for these students when they move onto collegiate settings. This will give them an opportunity to experience this, even if just for 1 day, and allow them to see if it is a classroom style they would like to look more into. I enjoy online classes and am currently working on my Master's through an online program. Off the top of my head I can recall taking 23 credit hours online for my bachelors. |

I really have trouble seeing that happen.
