Re: Convincing ESPN to Show Championships

The best way to feature FIRST Championships on television would require to fundamentally change the way FRC picks a championship alliance. You would have to change the pre-event bid system, cut down bids themselves and in turn, divisions, and basically do everything possible to turn it into a television event. FIRST has made it clear that for the time being (at least until 2017) that the FRC Championship format will remain mostly unchanged.

If the rights fee is next to nothing, and the production costs are minimal, they could probably make some money off of it. Production costs depend on how much coverage they'd want to do. Just Einstein could be done fairly easily. All the divisions would be a higher investment.

Does FIRST really not like the entertainment industry? I always just thought they wanted kids to think that being an engineer was just as cool (and much more possible than) being a baseball player/rap star, etc.

Re: Convincing ESPN to Show Championships

A couple of similar discussion have cropped up in the last year.

http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=115983

Personally, I'm a little conflicted on the issue. I love the home-grown coverage that's springing up surrounding FRC (FRC Top 25, The Roboshow, GameSense, etc), and getting a foothold in streaming and VoD services makes a lot of sense given the technology-centric goals of FIRST. But most of this programming is more about current FIRST enthusiasts than it is about reaching out to new people.

However, the will.i.am/ABC special was pretty much a ratings bust and not particularly entertaining. The old ESPN coverage is only really enthralling to those interested in FRC history. FRC events are pretty poorly suited to live TV coverage, with the amount of downtime and the low level of excitement for most matches.

The next step, in my mind, is trying to find more companies to sponsor local, high-quality regional rebroadcasts of FRC elimination tournaments, similar to how GM sponsors the Michigan State Championship and Time Warner Cable sponsors the Greater Kansas City Regional. We need to figure out how to capture FRC for a TV audience, before going for broke and having to wait a long time for another opportunity, and need to find a way to make it more financially viable for the channels that broadcast it.

I think it's unwise to downplay the significance of ESPN's regular programming. Things like "Pardon the Interruption," "Around the Horn," and the 6PM edition of "SportsCenter" are staples of ESPN and would be impacted by live FRC coverage. Additionally, there are regular season MLB games to be covered.

I don't think our (mostly) weekday (mostly) daytime championships would interfere with MLB games or the NBA Playoffs, considering weekday games are usually at night. Concerning the "Pardon the Interruption," "Around the Horn" programs, they have two main channels and 4 other ones, I think they could put us on one of them, while having their normal programs still shown. ESPN takes the normal stuff, ESPN2 takes us.

As someone else addressed, rights would be a fairly small fee. Production would actually be smaller than your average event, because of the fact that FIRST does do some of the things they need already, such as lighting and sound. It would also probably be cheaper at the Edwards Jones Dome than at any of our regional (except for the fact that there are more teams at champs) because I would presume that the Dome has the wiring for cameras and such built into it, since it hosts NFL games. I know other stadiums, such as Sporting Park in KC, have it built in, so it wouldn't be a stretch to think that the dome does.

Concerning appeal, I think if ESPN can make bowling and cheerleading (no offense to anyone) appealing, I think that they can make robotics appealing. Maybe do backgrounds on a couple of teams, showing them during build season and such. I don't think a taping is the right way, because I think part of their audience would be people wanting to watch it live. If it was taped, even some of us might not watch it, because we have already seen it.

Re: Convincing ESPN to Show Championships

I think you'd have to cycle around each field. Then later just show highlights. Keep the standings scrolling on the screen.
A big part is telling people who a team is. Not many people know the 2408 Shrapnel Sergeants represent Hazelwood West.
Get interviews from big teams to play before their matches and show updates from the pits. Make a story out of it, so people at home get interested. If the announcers know they're on TV, they'll get hyped. Maybe bring in some guest announcers sometimes (celebs, athletes, etc.)

Re: Convincing ESPN to Show Championships

I've never thought repeated qualification matches would make for good TV. If ESPN televises regionals, qualifications can be streamed uncut on ESPN3. Eliminations, on the other hand, would translate perfectly to TV. There are natural breaks, so there's no need for forced commericals. The match flow (1-1, 2-1, 3-1, 4-1, 1-2, 2-2...) could be confusing, but that can easily be overcome with graphics.

I remember hearing Dean say things like "Our culture is too focused on who can bounce a basketball better instead of things like who invented something to help people...". ESPN has a major role in getting our culture focused on sports and could be partially 'to blame' for it.

Does anyone have ratings on the championship when NASA showed it on their station?
