Re: How Many Students Allowed on Floor
There is no hard limit. Just keep crowding and safety in mind.

Re: How Many Students Allowed on Floor
The Driver station can have 2 drivers, a Human Player(Must be students) and a Coach(Mentor or Student). For the pits there is not a written maximum but with all of the tools, parts, and robot you can only have so many. A 10'X10' space is not a lot of room when you include a robot in that space.

Re: How Many Students Allowed on Floor
Are we allowed to switch those in the pits with those in the crowd?

Re: How Many Students Allowed on Floor
FIRST doesn't regulate who is in the PITS - there are no badges or anything for that (except maybe the "Safety Captain" if they still do that). The drivers/HP/coach have buttons, and you won't be allowed in the Driver Station area without those buttons.
As long as the people in the pits have safety glasses on, FIRST doesn't care who is in the pits (but just be mindful of the space concerns in the pit). -Danny |

Yes for the sanity of the scouts a trade out to pit patrol is a good idea!
Good Luck! Aloha |

Re: How Many Students Allowed on Floor
You are right that the drive team has 4 members (driver, operator, coach and human player) They all get buttons and they are the only team members that can go on the field during play.
The pit has no such restrictions other than space. In fact, you will probably want some of your non-pit workers doing other things in the pit area like doing pit scouting or handing out buttons or helping with safety glass handouts or just visiting other pits and seeing what is happening. You should schedule time for all of your team members to walk around in the pits and get to know the other teams. It is difficult getting to know anyone while in the stands so a great deal of interaction goes on in the pits. Just remember to be safe, wear your safety glasses and proper shoes and clothing and watch out for robots. Many teams will be in a hurry and will want to get their robots to the field quickly so they have the right of way in the pit travel areas. Good luck on we will see you on the field!! |

Re: How Many Students Allowed on Floor
Remember to have safety glasses available for everyone who might ever need to be in the pits. You can't be in the pit area without safety glasses on. There are some available to the public for borrowing, but those are intended for visitors, not teams.
As long as they are wearing safety glasses and closed-toe shoes, anyone can enter the pits as the please. Encourage your sponsors, team parents, and other teachers to have a look around the pits if they're new to FIRST. |

Re: How Many Students Allowed on Floor
As has been mentioned, you should not have so many people in the pit that you spill out into the aisle. 3-8 is a good number to consider, but remember you need to prioritize that to folks that will work on the robot.

We can fit our entire team in the pit with room for the robot!

Re: How Many Students Allowed on Floor
Anthony,
You will find that the pit swells following a match where the team has done very well or has done miserably. Everyone wants to congratulate the drivers or find out what happened. Pits will be very busy on Saturday morning with spectators, visitors and team members. At that time you might want to impose a limit on yourself. We start shooing our members back to the stands if it gets crowded. |

Re: How Many Students Allowed on Floor
Some venues will give each team a photo pass that allows a team photographer on the field as well, or close to the field. But that is not regulated by FIRST but by the event's organizers, based on the specifics of the venue.

It is also a good idea not to crowed the isle around your pit.

Quote:
Team 2220 keeps very close track of who should or should not be in our pit. We keep that number less than five-- a mentor, two repair people, and our pit rep, with an extra repairs specialist for particular components. This is completely a team thing-- we can't have our entire team in the pit, or there wouldn't be space for anything else (though I am tempted to try to stuff 110 people in our pit just to see if it's possible). |
