This. ^ The rules could have been much more clear for both offensive possession and defensive possession had they been separate, or one as a subset of the other.

2014 Game rules:

Quote:
3.1.4

ASSISTS are earned when a unique ALLIANCE ROBOT POSSESSES the ALLIANCE’S BALL in a unique ZONE
I don't see any of the OP's cases being an assist. As long as two robots are touching the ball, there is no UNIQUE alliance robot possessing the ball.

The way it would be input would presumably (and this is HIGHLY situationally dependent) end up being two robots possessing in X zones. If that is how it is input, then the field will take care of the Assist calculation. I could see a 2-assist (for 10 extra points) cycle happening that way, IF it was fairly obvious that both robots were in possession.

Now that IF is a really big one.

Re: 'Trivial' Posession allowed?

I would like to add another situation to the op's list

A robot gets about a foot away from the wall. A human player lands the ball in this one foot gap. The ball is pinned momentarily as the robot drives forward forcing the ball back out to the human player. (all human player rules would need to apply)

I would probably (again, situationally dependent) call that as a possession. Probably. That would be both a trap AND potentially a herd (I wouldn't necessarily call it a launch).

I think you're seriously misunderstanding the assist rules. When they say "unique", all they're saying is that each robot can only count in one zone.
