What's the weirdest thing you've used as a hammer that isnt a hammer?

Our team has used all kinds of things, wrenchs, a drill battery, wood, wheels, all kinds of stuff. I'm sure other teams go through similar struggles when there isnt a hammer available, right? What has your team used?

Re: What's the weirdest thing you've used as a hammer that isnt a hammer?

While camping I have used logs and split firewood as well as my shoe in place of a mallet. I have also, rarely, used a rock in place of a hammer in the same situation. That being said, if the actual tool is available the time you spend waiting for it could save you a lot overall. Especially with drill batteries, you could buy quite a few hammers for the cost of one drill battery.

I used an experiment stand from the chemistry department. They didn't like the damage inflicted

Re: What's the weirdest thing you've used as a hammer that isnt a hammer?

"Hey Kate! (my sister) you gotta thick skull, right? Come over here, I need to use it to dive a nail!" Ok, I kid.

When not at robotics, I've used pipes, text books, and even old Game Boys. Fail.

btw, If you guys are using Psyduck as your mascot, I might actually recommend Blaziken as ours. Ours is a phoenix, but everyone thinks it's a chicken. Blaziken covers two birds in one logo... literally.

A broken jaguar.

It wasn't particularly heavy-duty.

Cool Re: What's the weirdest thing you've used as a hammer that isnt a hammer?

I have gone as far as to us a pick-ax when I should have used a sledge-hammer or a hammer.

Re: What's the weirdest thing you've used as a hammer that isnt a hammer?

Well, I had a co-worker for a long time (now retired) that was named Orzeske. We worked up a whole set of standards for/about him. 1 OR=720 ft. lbs. He was 240 lbs and often used a three foot pipe as a lever on his pipe wrench. Flat blade screw drivers were speced as cold chisels and crescent wrenches (the back not the sides) had to be capable of use as a hammer. Of course anything in his tool box fit that category, lineman's pliers, ratchet wrench, and anything he could borrow from your toolbox. Wire cutters that had been used to cut through live wires, were now good for strippers as the arc had removed enough material to strip #16-#22 wire and could double as a crimper in a pinch. The 'Or drop test' was to pick up a piece of equipment you were working on and drop it from two or three feet above the bench. It if continued to work it was good to ship. It kept everyone awake. Nice guy, I miss him.

Re: What's the weirdest thing you've used as a hammer that isnt a hammer?

We have about 20 hammers at robotics, so we usually use an actual hammer.

Even though I've never done this, I'll just add this: http://youtu.be/HIJTpJN5Fro?t=1m10s
