Re: 2014 Greater Kansas City Regional

First off, congrats to team 3528 UpNext for the big Chairman's win! There aren't many teams that have come so far so fast. Hats off to the team and all the wonderful mentors that you have, we are proud to call you friends.

Also, congrats to the winners 118, 1986 (for their 8th consecutive regional win), and 1723! Also, congrats to the finalists 1775, 1806, and 935 for putting up a heck of a fight. Those were some of the most intense matches I have ever seen!

Also, thanks to all of you for the pats on the back and kind words over the weekend about the WFFA. Winning that award was one of the most meaningful things I have ever experienced, and I can't overstate my gratitude for the students and mentors that make our team great. Also, I have to give credit to my wife, who is not only an amazing mentor herself, but puts up with my robot obsession with grace.

Thank you Gavin. We were so surprised to hear lines from our presentation being read and when our Hero Project was mentioned, we couldn't contain our excitement. Even though you guys and Titanium had already earned a 2014 Regional Chairman's Award, we still had tough competition from quality programs such as Liberty (1764), Team Driven (1730) and Broncobots (1987). It just shows how incredibly dedicated the teams in Kansas City are to FIRST.

The Woodie Flowers Award couldn't have been given to a better person. It was so touching to see you give your students a great big hug before coming down to accept the award from Woodie himself. Congrats.

Re: 2014 Greater Kansas City Regional

The qualifications featured some beautiful games. No doubt these successes had some influence on the alliance selection process.

The eliminations were something completely different, featuring aggressive defense and winners often decided by penalties. While I wouldn't call them beautiful, they were incredibly thrilling.
  • Final 1 was a 12 point win by red, where they held a 30 point advantage in fouls.
  • Final 2 was a 33 point win for blue, where they held an 80 point advantage in fouls.
  • Final 3 was a 5 point win for red in spite of a 50 point foul deficit.
A big thanks to our alliance partners 118 and 1723. The Robonauts were a real pleasure to work with. They clinched 1st place early enough to collaborate on a pick list, led a great 3 team strategy discussion over the lunch break, and delivered in the clutch on the field. The F.B.I. had exactly what we needed in a 3rd pick as a middle assister. Easy human load with a great intake capable of passing back out. They're also the team whose LabView training program provided the foundation for the Innovation in Control award we earned this weekend. With the finals featuring 2 wildcards on the red alliance both teams were fighting to take their 3rd pick to the world championship and we were thrilled to win and take 1723 with us to St. Louis.

Hats off to the finalists 1775, 1806, and 935. Hard to imagine how 935 with their 2 ball autonomous fell that far in the draft. No one in the arena was sure who won that final match until the referee's posted the score. All three of you have championship caliber machines and it's fitting that the wildcards at least let 1775 and 1806 move on.

A little disappointed that we couldn't find a way to get our friends from 4522 to the world championship. According to tracker they had the highest OPR in the building at 128.0 (For comparison 1986 had 119.4, 118 had 115.4, and 1730 had 82.2). It's amazing what you've accomplished in just 2 years. Expecting even greater things in the near future.

Up Next! has an incredible program, and it was great to see you guys win the Regional Chairman's Award. Looking forward to seeing 3528 at champs (But not as an opponent. That didn't work out well last time.) Kansas City is full of fantastic teams, and I wouldn't be surprised to see a couple other area teams win the award later this season.

What a year for 1939. RCA and Dean's List earlier at Arkansas, and a well deserved WFFA for Gavin Wood in KC. You are an inspiration.

Very thankful that FIRST decided to let seniors remain eligible for the Dean's list one more year. Cameron Lerch is the heart of our team, and the greatest ambassador for the program we've ever had. Watching you hear your name called out for the DLFA is my greatest memory from this weekend.

As a final note: We had some growing pains moving to the new venue. With so many teams in the area it may be time to think about running two smaller events instead of one big one. I'm sure most of the RCA caliber teams would join us in playing at one of the two and volunteering at the other. Just a thought from someone who has little influence on these sort of things.

Me and some people from my team were able to interview Dr. Woodie Flowers when he came to the regional! If anyone is interested, here is the link. Enjoy and congrats to all teams that attended.

Re: 2014 Greater Kansas City Regional

I feel like I owe 1730, 1763, and 2874 an apology.

As many of you noticed, there was a long delay in the middle of alliance selections. We on the field were notified of a discrepancy between the rankings that were shown in the pit and online, compared to what was on the screen at the field. We discovered that in the computer, it showed the score as 138-131 giving blue the win. However, a score of 151-138 was reported everywhere else, giving red the win. Unsure of what happened, we have very few options since alliance selections had started, and I decided to keep it the 138-131 score.

Last night, I went through and watched that match, scoring each ball and using my notes for the penalty that was applied. With my manually scoring, I got a score of 151-138 for the red alliance. I honestly have no idea what caused the score to change, but the best guess is that some glitch in the system caused it.

I know this effected ranking, and because of that it makes me very upset. So for all teams involved, I'm sorry that this happened, and I sincerely hope it didn't effect anyone too greatly.

It looks like rescoring that match would have raised 1730 a couple of spots in the draft. They were already guaranteed to be an alliance captain. Would they have still said yes to 4522? I think so. Probably no difference here.

What is more interesting is that 1810 would have dropped several spots with the loss. That would have changed the bottom portion of the draft.

Original Ranking --- Corrected Ranking
0118 -------------- 0118
1986 -------------- 1986
4522 -------------- 4522
1775 -------------- 1775
1806 -------------- 1730 (assuming the correction included 10 assist points)
3528 -------------- 1806
1730 -------------- 3528
1810 -------------- 3928
3928 -------------- 5119
5119 -------------- 3612
3612 -------------- 1810

Alliance Selection went thusly:
1. 118-1986-1723 (W)
2. 4522-1730-2346 (SF)
3. 1775-1806-935 (F)
4. 3528-1825-1939 (SF)
5. 1810-1987-4646 (QF)
6. 3928-3172-2410 (QF)
7. 5119-2164-1982 (QF)
8. 3612-1802-2457 (QF)

Good news is that everyone who was an alliance captain would have still been an alliance captain. None of the lower seeds pulled off the upset in quarterfinals as it was. But who knows what the Butterfly Effect would have yielded.

Re: 2014 Greater Kansas City Regional

Tyler, thank you so much. You did not have to do this, but it is good to let everyone know what transpired and what caused the delay in alliance selection. It did not effect the alliance Team Driven was going to go into the finals with. I also don't believe it effected the outcome of the Kansas City Regional. The competition is hard on the referees and has been noted at all the regional's this year. Thank You for all you hard work for FIRST.
