How formal are your writing styles for the Chairman's award?

Right now I have the chance to work on our team's submission a bit more and I'm wondering about writing styles. How did yours turn out?

Our team decided to have a kind of formal writing style while keeping our submission in the form of a newsletter magazine. It turned out to have a great flow of reading and made placing pictures thru out the paper easier. It would be amazing if our rookie team won but I am very proud of how our Chairman's Award came out.

Our rookies sent me their Chairman's Award. I said to myself, "OMG, they're competitors for the Chairman's Award in their first year!!!" I'm waiting for them to post theirs or let me post it.

*puzzled* It was a sophomore graphics marvel on his own computer.

Often an announcement in the school bulletin would turn up surprising results.

For instance, I put in that we needed a woodworker to make a custom surfboard for our control board. That day a sub heard the announcement, and told her husband. He worked for LA Maritime Museum. He and mentors brainstormed and concluded cutting out an old surfboard would work. The box control board fits into the cut out surfboard. A woodworker wasn't necessary after all.

Control Board

ps. our rookies chairman's award I was so impressed with is only words.

this all has wound up sort of odd, this is the first year our team has tried for this award and I'm just a sophomore who got elected back in May to make a project carry it out and do the presentation. I had no idea they were so decorative, I thought it was an essay and maybe a picture or two. The actual things we did were good...but the presentation sadly won't look as good as that.

Glitz and Graphics won't win the award. Ours doesn't have a single picture. The teams that win the awards win because of their actions in promoting FIRST. I think some teams lose sight of that. The Chairman's Award is a year-round project.

This is our seventh year in the program, and the first time we've applied for it. If we hadn't had this sophomore graphics marvel, I doubt ours would look so good. Every team is different, and each year can be different. Just do what you can and choose to do this year.

I made my submission look pretty good only using Microsoft Word and printing it at a CopyCop down the street on some nice paper. It did take a while to write though... I'd compare writing a Chairman's Award Submission with writing a College essay.

With the changes in submission format this year, I'm happy to see that content is more important than the glitz of making a nice video or presentation. If you have the information to keep barraging the judges with event after event, happening after happening, and even more information. They'll be impressed.

Just one thing... This award diserves respect. Do NOT LIE or overexaggerate to the point where the information becomes falsely presented. Be careful of this during the interview, that can get a little nerve-wracking.

Good Luck!

ByE

I divided the work among high school students, college students, and engineers. I selected different people to write about the topic they seemed to have the most experience with.

I was simply the person in charge of getting the submission done so I was the one who pieced the puzzle together. Haha... the high school student working closest with me was better at English than I was, so he edited it.

Check out the submission at:

891's submission

Our team's submission was pretty informal - enough to get the ideas across and still look like a team of high school students rather than english teachers. I can send anyone a copy in PDF format if they want it...it's pretty big tho. 'Course I put as much into looks as content because I'm layout editor for our school paper.....PageMaker is a great thing for schnazzying up things when you ain't got much to say, but have to submit something to satisfy your sponsors and grant supporters.......

IM me (akacomputerboy) if you want to see ours, I can send it to you....just be prepared with a broadband connection to receive it.
