Winning a competition on your 18th? PRICELESS!

Here's a question for the historic record keepers of CD: Has any team's driver ever been known to win a blue "WINNER" banner on their 18th birthday?

Yesterday, Jake Mathews, the driver for our team - 3467: The Windham Windup - did exactly that - he drove our team's robot to victory at the Northeastern District competition (along with a little help from 125 and 5000, btw). The alliance also put up a tournament-high score of 275 (w/ no penalties) in the last match of the day!

I'm thinking that this may be the first time a driver has won a blue banner on the exact day of their 18th. Anyone know of any others?

Congratulations Jake!

53 regionals per year (not including district events or Championship) means 159 competition team wins per year. 2 drivers per team = 318 drivers win per year (some drivers win multiple times, but this is number of winning days for a particular driver).

Based on statistics alone, I'd estimate this happens nearly once every year.

But then you have to consider that some students drive when they are much younger than 18.

Re: Winning a competition on your 18th? PRICELESS!

The weekend of South Florida, we had two team members with (seventeenth)birthdays, a driver and a mascot. We won the regional, won Gracious Professionalism, and one of the birthdays was named a Dean's List Finalist.

Especially funny because a team tradition used to be telling random strangers "Happy Birthday!" and waiting for confused responses.

Re: Winning a competition on your 18th? PRICELESS!

Our driver turned 18 last September during the Battle O' Baltimore. We clinched the #1 seed and won the event, never losing a match.

No winner banner, but we won 30 t-shirts and a really cool trophy.
