Team mentor up for top teacher of the year on ABC's Live with Kelly and Michael

Team 2638's mentor John Motch is a finalist in the Top Teacher competition on Live with Kelly and Michael. Please go the link below to vote for him, once a day if possible from Friday May, 16th through Monday May, 19th. He is a dedicated mentor and truly deserves this award. It would mean a lot to our team and the entire community if you would do so.

Thanks,
Team 2638, Great Neck South Highschool

Done!

Good luck and I hope the FIRST community votes often. How cool would it be for a FIRST mentor to win!

With the request if you list few of his traits or something special about the person or something he has done that you think he deserves, it would be great help. You have stated he is FRC mentor, its great, hats off to him. That in itself deserves an award, but I would like to know more about him. Obviously you liked him so much that you posted this request, I would like to know and feel good about him and thank him for everything he has done. Genuinely I want to know more about him.

I wish him good luck...teachers and mentors deserve it.

Talking Re: Team mentor up for top teacher of the year on ABC's Live with Kelly and Michael

Congrats to all the finalist for the Top Teacher Search.

However, there is no more deserving person for this top honor than John Motchkavitz (Motch!). I was lucky enough to be Motch's student-teacher for 2 months prior to my college graduation. During that brief time with him at Great Neck South HS, I learned more about teaching, leading, caring, and being a mentor than I can adequately explain in a single post. Motch welcomed me into the GNS family as soon as we met. As seen in the video, Motch is known by EVERYONE in Great Neck. Just by walking the halls with him, everyone knew my name by the end of that first day! He made sure to take care of me - (just a college kid he never met, but whom he wanted to help!)

I was fortunate enough to get involved with GNS FIRST Robotics team (2638) while student teaching there. We won the SPBLI Regional Championship on Long Island, and all traveled by bus to Atlanta as a family. Immediately, I was hooked on FIRST. Since then, I have introduced and developed a FIRST Tech Challenge program at my school, including two teams, and hosts of regional qualifiers.

Without Motch, I don't know if I would have found my passion for robotics, and I might have missed out on the opportunity for my current job, and my current robotics program. Not only did he inspire me, but he has remained a close friend, regularly calling, visiting, and supporting all of my endeavors.

I hope to pass along the passion to my students that MOTCH passed to me. I know that I owe him a lot for my success. I hope to someday be as influential a teacher as he is.

Thanks Motch!
VOTE FOR MOTCH!!!!!!

Re: Team mentor up for top teacher of the year on ABC's Live with Kelly and Michael

I have been working with Motch for the past 8 years. We teach together, as well as co-mentor team 2683. He gives so much to his students and community, I cannot think of a more deserving educator.

Please vote for Motch - it means so much to Team 2638 to have the support of the entire FIRST community. Help give back to a man who has given so much to FIRST, his school, and his community.

Re: Team mentor up for top teacher of the year on ABC's Live with Kelly and Michael

My knowledge of Motch only spans for the time I've been in High School for. Motch started FIRST robotics eight years ago.
In the past 2 years he has started 6 LEGO league teams
A volunteer fire fighter, and a 911 first responder
Four times each year he visits NYC to give the homeless clothes with students of the Great Neck South High School
He has gone on service learning trips to work on Native American reservations
He has builds all the sets for the school plays
This has all been documented in the video Corrigan has posted

Now there are some things about a person's personality that can't be just listed, but shown when you meet them. Motch has done multiple things for which many are grateful for. He has stayed after school hours on end, whether it be for FIRST, wood shop, lacrosse, helping the community, etc.
If anyone has any questions or wants to know more about him, feel free to post here, and either myself or someone who knows Motch will do their best to answer.
