Behind the Glass With 610

Hi CD,

With this video we tried to emulate 24/7, a 4-episode TV segment produced by HBO which follows athletes and teams leading up to important matches and games. In our video we mic'd up the drive team and followed them for a match. For the shots used in this video we used a mix of DSLRs, GoPros, and a Google Glass.

Here is the video. Enjoy!

Pretty slick video guys, great job on the editing. Definitely one of my favorite this year.

Re: Behind the Glass With 610

Such a cool video! Having the driving coach voiceover during the match was really interesting, I really liked it. I hope you guys continue to make videos like this, the angles used to record the match itself was really nice. How did you get it so it was nearly a bird's-eye view?

Re: Behind the Glass With 610

Very cool video. I really like your team's branding and design ethic, and you guys do a lot of cool video work.

We also used Google Glass on our human player this year with some cool results. Wish I could find video of the same matches we recorded but nothing seems to have been saved from SMR. Kept switching around our GoPro from robot to our driver station as well. After seeing what can be done with all of this, I'm going to push more for our team to invest time into planning this stuff.

Re: Behind the Glass With 610

I agree with Shrub, the driving coach's voice-over was a nice added touch. I especially liked that he was calm and always positive to his drive team--its no wonder you have great results regularly. The various camera angles edited into one single time line was very well done too.

Re: Behind the Glass With 610

I think this is the angle to take if FRC ever wants to become a real televised sport. Mic the coaches, stream footage from the robots, top-down and field-side views are all great. Hearing the coaches talk during the game really makes the match exciting and the editing in this video is top-notch.

I'm a bit curious why both the drivers are wearing earbuds. What are they listening to?

Re: Behind the Glass With 610

Jacob Kachura on our team really enjoys cinematography. His three other production this year included our release video, GTRW wrap-up and Jordan Grant's FRC music video.

Enjoy!!!

The earbuds were used for their in-line microphones to record what they said during the match. They were attached to iPods.

I noticed this too, but I'm not so sure that being nice to the drivers is the way for every team to succeed. I've seen some of the best coaches in FRC put enormous pressure on their drivers (even going as far as cussing them out), and still get good results. When I coached, I tried to be generally nice to my drivers, but definitely yelled at them when they were doing something wrong. When I drove, I definitely appreciated when my coach told me I was doing something wrong, as I basically knew when I was doing something right. But I think you're right about calmness, coaches (or drivers) that flip out under pressure generally don't do well.

Of course, knowing that that match would be recorded and put on the internet might have effected how the coach was coaching.
