Stackers mounting a comeback?

Early profiles show KOH Robots are the most popular strategy. But, the more recent profiles have been predominantly stack related. See: http://www.soap108.com/2003/charts/index.cfm

Nice site but I've got a few questions. Where did those match scores come from? Would it be possible to have pictures available?

As for the KOH being the most predominent. No offense to your site but its a much smalller cross section than lets say CD. In the galleries its very evident that most bots are stackers. Few teams,69 229 swampthing and a few others, have at least posted pics of true ramp-doms.

I got bored so I went to http://firstrobotics.net/03gallery/ and counted the bots best I could just looking at the thumbnails, except for the really cool ones. Out of 147 bots heres what I saw.

17 Low/Scissor Stackers, the names pretty clear.

18 Bin-Huggin-Hippies, these gals hold stacks inside a structure of some sort.

9 ForkLifts, again clear.

8 Chlidren of 2001, with multisegment arms they are reminescent of the 2001 big-ball bots. Additional props to 513 for one of the biggest arms ever.

2 Camels, these cigarette smoking bots carry crates horizontally over there backs.

6 Ramp-Doms, secures the entire ramp.

There were many more bots that didn't have a clear category, and other bots that looked as if they were incomplete or just ran around pushing boxes.

Report Question

When I entered in the data of our robot at soap I could not find a proper classification of our robot. I believe that there are more types of robots this year than just Stacker and KOH. Maybe this is why your data is showing more KOH than stackers. I could be very wrong about this but What does everyone else think about just being a stacker or a KOH. I do agree that this will be the most dominant.

I think there are going to be teams that defy classification, but for the most part, the categories listed should cover it.

We felt these would be the two predominant types of robots, and that for the most part they'd be exclusive to one another. I.e. a really good KOH isn't going to even attempt to stack. Plus, as far as scoring goes, these are the major ways to get points.

Yeah, there will be robots that are only bin throwers. They don't stack, and they don't block the hill- they just help move bins. There may be robots that simple try to un-seat KOH robots.

Make notes in the free-form Strengths and Weakness sections for robots that dont fall in the Stack vs. KOH.

Thanks for the feedback,
KA-108

well, it has been my theory that it will takes a good combination of abilities to have a successful team

last year one single goal grabber could get both goals and win with 30 points. but with a ball bot, scores got into the 140's.

the koth bot is the equivalent of a goal grabber bot
the stacker is the equivalent of a ball bot.

it will take one of each to maximize the scores in the matches. and this year, that will be important in the finals.
