Outreach event for all teams to try!

Hi FIRST Community! My name is Marin Kobin. I have been a FIRST participant for 10 years, starting as a team member of FRC 1468 and now as a volunteer, mentor, and coach for all four programs in New York and Virginia.

I know that in addition to building robots and learning STEM skills many FIRST teams like to help in their communities. I’m hoping that some of your teams might be willing to help me with a cause that is near to my heart and my community, Cookies for Kids’ Cancer (http://www.cookiesforkidscancer.org). Cookies for Kids’ Cancer is committed to raising funds for research to develop new, improved treatments for pediatric cancer, the #1 disease killer of children in the U.S.

September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. In an effort to show support and raise critical funds for childhood cancer research, Cookies for Kids’ Cancer is asking for Good Cookies to become part of the 50 State Challenge. Individuals, schools, businesses, and communities are encouraged to host grassroots events in all 50 states during the month of September. You can raise money through any type of event. Suggestions include bake sale, pajama day at school, car wash, dance-a-thon, dodgeball tournament, etc.

Currently, the following states are missing representation in the 50 State Challenge: Alaska, Delaware, Idaho, Mississippi, North Dakota, South Dakota, Utah, and Wyoming. I know that many of these states have FIRST representation, and I was hoping the FIRST community could help us to fulfill the 50 State Challenge.

This past May, during a small FTC off-season event held in Fredericksburg, VA, we held a bake sale and raised $250 for Cookies for Kids' Cancer. Just think of how much of an impact the FIRST community could have on this nationwide event. If you can help bring the FIRST spirit of Making it Loud to help children in need, or if you want to learn more, please contact me. I’d love to see the FIRST community fulfill the 50 state challenge with the eight currently missing states, and then maybe even complete a 50 state challenge of our own!
