Why doesn’t Star Trek have more droids?

Well sure, there’s DATA, but in the distant future, shouldn’t there be robots of all types all over the place? I never see very many in Star Trek. Even today we already have robot battling competitions on TV… it’s only a matter of time before they’re everywhere, don’t you think?

The Borg are pretty much all robots, at least in part. They play a major role in Star Trek.

Star Wars Is better and has more droids! LoL but while we're on this topic I think that your right and Trek doesn't have enough bots. But if you think about it, S-Trek does have many holograms, so perhaps that makes up for the lack of robots.

Wow I hope people don't think I'm a Treky now. Lol j-k.

I have to agree. Star Wars has the droids for utility work. The starship computer in Star Trek functions for everything like an astromech unit does in a starfighter like the X-Wing or on a starship. But also yes Star Trek the people do the repair work and all but it shared by driods and the crew of a vessel in Star Wars. Short handed folks like pirates and the Rebel Alliance use manpower where the Imps can afford to use droids. So I guess it all balances out.

well, also, Star Trek, the original, was written in large part before the robot craze started. The others were based on it. Oh, and robot costumes, when they did have robots, were REALLY corny - not believable at all. After all, in a film, you only need to keep it working a few months, a year maybe, but you don't have the wear and tear of regular episode filming.

At least nowadays, the special effects are to the level that Star Trek could have a true (i.e., not humanoid) robot/droid. Look at the special effects they had to use for Odo. You don't see anything like that in Star Wars.

Oh, and raise your hand if you also think the Borg is the best thing to happen to sci-fi.

Resistence is futile!

The best thing to do in Star Trek Armada...nultiplayer over the internet.....be the Borg

Continuelly (while building giant fleets of warships of spheres and cubes of various types) send to all your opponents..."WE ARE THE BORG. RESISTENCE IS FUTILE. WE ARE THE BORG."
....now eventually someone will go "Shut up" (or something similar)....and your response "YOU WILL COMPLY."....which is really funny if they tell you to go....oh never mind....you get the picture.

most of the stuff fixes itsself, or has enough backups so that it doesn't have to.

don't know why there aren't any droids, actually... they've got a buncha nanoprobes... maybe they used to have droids, but the "MUST SHRINK STUFF TO MAKE IT PORTABLE" revolution like we're having now turned em into nanoprobes

You guys have missed a crucial element that only a trekkie (me) appears to recognize. When something is wron on a ship like the Enterprise or Voyager, it tells you exactly what's wrong. It's not like the humans need to look around for problems. The computer will say it..."Warp Core Breach Imminent...", whereas on a ship in Star Wars, you'd look at a screen that would tell you the general area of where the problem is, more often than not. Then a droid can be sent to look for it. It's alot easier for a bot to find a problem, and on a ship like the Voyager, think of it this way: The bot that's finding the problem is the ship itself. It's one huge droid.

Yes, the Borg kick some serious a$$, but I think the Klingons are better. Qua'plah! I dunno if anyone else but purpledaisy knows about this, but there are these games for both the Borg and the Klingon which are RPGs...they put you, quite literally, into the body of that respective species. It's sweet. The games are simply titled "Borg" and "Klingon", if, I'm not mistaken.

I belive you are reffering to Klingon Academy. I'm not quite sure about the Borg one though. And it looks like I'm not the only one here with Armada.

But getting back on topic, if you ask me, the Borg do act like droids in the fact that they are single minded, and each of them has one sole purpose. Data is above the average Star Wars droid, so he doesn't count. That leaves us the Collective, and those nasty Echo-Papa drones (and 10 an 01 acted a lot like droids too).

We are the Borg. Lower your shields and surrender your ships. We will add your biological and technological distinctiveness to our own. Your culture will adapt to service us. Resistance... is futile.

So do you think the creators of the show and the movies are seeing something we're not regarding bots. In the real world ya see a lot of machines helping on assemly lines, etc or homemade machines on shows like battle bots but not a lot more funtional human assistance bots. Is technology just not there yet? Anyone here ever thought about building a bot, real or virtual? I got into this topic watching battle bots and wanted to try it but was a little, ok a lot, short on cash so I started looking for virtual options.

Hey guys, now that the weekend is here, I have a chance to look into this a little more. Anyone heard of games called CAD or Robot Arena? http://www.robotarena.com/ I found that but couldn't find anything on the other. RA2 looks cool but thought I would try to get some feedback first.

PC Gamer hated Robot Arena, saying it was too easy and repetitive. I'll see if I can find the review later.
