Serious Culture Shift!

Quote:
(The vision of FIRST is) to transform our culture by creating a world where science and technology are celebrated and where young people dream of becoming science and technology leaders.
-- Dean Kamen, FIRST founder, at http://www.usfirst.org/aboutus/vision
In case anyone else hasn't noticed, two of the five nominees for the Golden Globes "Best Film, Drama", of the five Screen Actors' Guild Awards for "Outstanding Performance by the Cast of a Motion Picture", and two of the top predictions for "Best Picture" Oscars are biographies of a mathematician/computer scientist (The Imitation Game/Alan Turing) and a physicist (The Theory of Everything/Stephen Hawking)! Sounds like a big step in that direction - who has local (or global) stories to contribute?

(List of Golden Globe nominees) And in the Golden Globe nominees for best animated feature, Big Hero 6 stars a kid who builds robot and HTTYD2 stars Hiccup who is basically an engineer.

The movie Spare Parts will open Jan 16th, 2015. The main character, played by George Lopez, is based on my friend Fredi, the 2013 Woodie Flowers award winner (and also on Dr. Cameron)

Didn't Fredi also have another movie made about them as well?

Well I'd bet that Fredi would say that the movie is about the kids but the documentary version that stars Fredi and the actual students involved is called Underwater Dreams.

Re: Serious Culture Shift!

How about some local stories, as well?

For example: at Slidell High, the FRC team has intersected with the football team, both boys' and girls' basketball teams, cheerleaders, baseball, swimming, tennis, band (massively), Navy Jr ROTC (massively), as well as all of the usual chess/beta/NHS/gaming clubs that one might expect. We have actually had a lettered athlete and a lettered cheerleader leave those squads for robotics, and a prospective NJROTC commanding officer waive the C.O. assignment so he could be our programming lead (he's how majoring in cyber engineering at LA Tech). We've also made great strides at breaking into our athletics-centric culture among the administration at SHS; we haven't yet been declared an "official sport" like in AZ, but we're working that road even as we blog...

That's very impressive! As an MCJROTC CO this year and programming lead, my worst days are when there are JROTC events and robotics events on the same day and I have to pick one. They're both my babies
