ROBOT DIMENSIONS

"R3
B. the ROBOT must be able to be arranged into a TRANSPORT CONFIGURATION with dimensions which do not exceed 28
in. wide, 42 in. long, and 78 in. tall"

Does this mean that the robot can extend in any direction horizontally to be as wide or as long as we want after the start of the match? or are we solely limited to 28x42x78?

It can extend to be as long or wide as you want.

Re: ROBOT DIMENSIONS

Don't quote me on this, but it seems that the transport rule is pretty much the same as the expansion rule from last year, except your robot doesn't need to expand automatically once the game starts. It can start the game already in its expanded configuration, it just needs to be able to get back into transport mode once you take it off the field.

That is correct. The Transport Configuration only applies when the robot is being moved from the pit to another location like the field.

Quote:
TRANSPORT CONFIGURATION – a configuration of a ROBOT which does not exceed 2 ft. 4 in. wide x 3 ft. 6 in. deep x 6 ft. 6 in. tall and is
used in transferring ROBOTS among competition locations (e.g. the Team’s Pit, the Practice Field, Inspection, the ARENA, etc.)
The only size restriction rule that applies during the match is the height restriction. Your robot can grow beyond the transport configuration limits, and it seems that doing so manually once the robot is on the field will be permissible.

Quote:
R3 The ROBOT must satisfy the following size constraints:
A. during a MATCH, the ROBOT height may not exceed 78 in.

Re: ROBOT DIMENSIONS

Keep G10 in mind while designing expanding mechanisms.

G10 DRIVE TEAMS may not cause significant or repeated delays to the start of a MATCH.

DRIVE TEAMS are expected to stage their ROBOTS for a MATCH safely and swiftly. As a guideline, ROBOTS should be configurable in fewer than sixty (60) seconds.

Re: ROBOT DIMENSIONS

The other thing to keep in mind is G7-C:

Quote:
G7: When placed on the FIELD for a MATCH, each ROBOT must be:
:
C. completely outside of their AUTO ZONE and LANDFILL ZONE.

Well not quite - you can't extend outside the field or onto the other side.

Re: ROBOT DIMENSIONS

The TRANSPORT CONFIGURATION is provided so that you can build a robot that can get through a standard door. While many venues have no obstacles between the pit and the field, many still require everything to enter and exit through 32 inch wide doors. With the door frame and hinges, 28 inches is about as wide as will fit through the opening. (Assuming there is no crash bar on the door.)

You can extend over the other side, you just cannot touch anything there. I'm not sure why this would be helpful, but it is permitted.

Re: ROBOT DIMENSIONS

You can also disassemble your robot to fit it in the transport configuration. Just be sure you can reassemble it quickly enough once on the field.
