Shareware Game Talk...

I was wondering, how many people have heard of the Escape Velocity series of games. They are one of my favorite game series, especially since they were done by a shareware company.

Also, what is everybody's favorite shareware game, and have you ever paid for it?

Wow, I played Escape Velocity way back in the day. I guess I was a freshman in high school, so that was a little over 4 years ago...this was all before Escape Velocity Override came out.

I had to break that game up into like 5 disks to bring it home where I didn't have internet...

Favorite shareware game?

Porrasturvat

I never played Escape Velocity, but I did get a humongous pack of shareware games back in '97. It included one of the most addictive fighting games I've ever played: One Must Fall: 2097.

I played the shareware version for several years. Eventually, I learned that it had been released in freeware, and I was happy. I downloaded it at school (I wasn't allowed free access to the internet until last summer (waste of a good cable modem!), after my Junior year. Parents = control freaks), spanned it on six floppies, and revelled in the glory of the full game.

Last year, I learned that they were making another OMF game, OMF: Battlegrounds. It looks pretty enough to fry my computer, and I am happy.

For awhile i thought Porrasturvat was really cool, but then the Army released a free game called Army Operations. It's a really cool shooter that simulates training and missions in the United States Army. You can either download it for free, or pick up a copy at a computer game store (this version costs $10-$20 because you get it on a cd and you get a pretty big book that explains the game)

Hrmmm...

Well, I've never played One Must Fall (note to self: download it), but America's Army is NOT shareware... Its a bad shooter that is buggy and slow... I suggest either CS or UT2003 if you want to play a team based shooter... As for Escape Velocity, theres a new version coming out that is being ported to the PC right now... Its almost done beta testing (hrmmm, how do i know that?) so keep your eyes open at AmbrosiaSW .

Even though it's old, they're still great. Commander Keen all the way! (4 is best!)

Ah, the glory days of shareware.

EGA Trek. The greatest Trek game of all time. Sure, Bridge Commander is pretty, but you don't have a death ray. It was probably the first computer game I played. When we moved we lost our copy, and it was years before I finally found another. I play it every now and then when feel that need to trash some Klingons.

I tried to register it, but my ten doller bill just got returned to sender. So Nels Anderson, if your out there, let me know!

Anyone remeber Hugo? Those games drove me nuts.
