Smile We have a HQ!

Our school just discovered a previously unknown room in our new gym, and has lent it to our robotics club for the rest of the year! Even better, it has not one, but two seperate showers in it (although we will probably use them as closets)! Now we have a place to call our own.

Congrats!

There are many teams who are not as blessed with benevolent high schools. Be sure to keep the connection good, and you'll do fine.

Our team is really lucky. We aren't from a single high school, per say, but the New Horizons Regional Education Center. All the students go to their regular high school (from around 12 in the local area) for half the day, and New Horizons for the other half. Most of our team (including me) is from the Governor's school part of New Horizons, but it also has welding classes, carpentry, machining, etc. etc. etc. Basically we have our own room for consrtuction but full wood shops, welding shops, and machine shops in the same building! I absolutely love it.

stay persistant

I spent 2 years on 122 in high school with new horizons, definitely one of the best experiences of my life, they've really got their act together, and i think they have what i suspect nearly all the rest of us teams want, almost the total support of the school (at least they did when i was there)
I've been on team 401 here at Virginia Tech for 3 years now, and its been a long process, but we're slowly gaining support of the school system. Our first year we weren't even allowed to use our high school's name, second year they recognized us more, gave us some support, and initially the closet off of a bathroom from a woodshop to keep our stuff in. This year we've finally got multiple teachers, and a fairly nice shop to work out of, and we're at least 2 weeks ahead of where we've been in the construction process in the last 2 years.
'moral of this story boys and girls, stay persistent, and try to make contacts in the schools and community, schools will eventually have to listen to you'

Last year we were also lucky. Our teacher is the head of the math department so she just gave us a room. We also get full control of the autoshop from now on. Our principal kicked out all of the lazy auto shop students because all they did was sit around, watch day time tv, and smoke pot. Its pretty funny, that all they have to show for this year is a desk welded to a car.

Normally, we work in our school's autoshop, since our teacher is the autoshop instructor. It has a whole bunch of machines and tools that he inherited from the metal shop when it was eliminated. Unfortunately, our school is being renovated, so we are in a new school with no shop, and we have to work in a middle-school wood shop. It's not the best, but its better than nothing, and we are making do.

I should be able to get a 360 degree picture of our robot room up sometime soon. Check back at this thread to take a look! The actual robot room is pretty small (a car bay behind a welding shop) but we use the welding shop, machine shop, and carpentry shop so spread out isn't a problem.

~Tom Fairchild~, who loves New Horizons, where he's doing all this!

We have it pretty good. The lead teacher is the shop teacher and we get to use the machine shop after school. Only drawback is the machines. Can you say WWII?
We have one machine that can mill straight holes, but has a problem with flat milling and one that mills pretty good flats but doesn't drill straight.
Oh well.

My team did not have a home until some member of the local community asked the people at AES Redondo Beach (the local power plant) if they had a place for us. They gave us a 400 square food workshop and a 500 square foot break room all to ourselves. We were truely blessed by their actions. Last year we had to build our robot in a small workshop about 25 minutes away from our school in a kinda bad area. (the kinda area you did not really want to do those all nighters in) We had 12 students that year and it was corwded. This year we have 23 so it was great that the city and AES gave us a home that was larger than our old one.

Cool HQ

Our team, after much searching and begging, secured a floor of the Catholic Charaties Building which gives us about 2,000 - 3,000 sqare feet of space. Thus each sub-team gets their own room to work in, making us very happy. Also, we have some area in St. Joesph's Church for construction of our robot.

As nice as this is, it unfortunately is for this year only because it will be put to some other permanat use in April.

Our HQ

Our team has people from 4 different schools, but we work at the one I go to, Appleton East, because it has the best metal shop and we use the tech center for the main headquarters - its got all the computer and tables and a bunch of tools... but then there is a wood shop, metal shop and autoshop to use within just a few feet of our tech center. Its pretty nice. We also have the 'back room' which is a room off the end of our tech center, it's got robot parts and scrap pieces and it is where we keep our rule binders, and prototypes and that is what our control team calls home 99% of the time.

our HQ is our "tech center" computers, tv, lots of space and we also get to use the school's shop! we can do almost anything welding, milling and lathe work. for the really hard parts we use some machines at the "tech" or Fox Valley Technical College.
