What kind of sensor is used to detect the reflective tape for auto?

This is typically done with an LED ring, a camera, and vision software -- sample software is provided. Similar reflective tape uses in FRC games have been around since 2011 I think (certainly 2012)

This is the best way to do it if you're just trying to trigger an action when the sensor senses the tape. But if you're trying to have your robot "aim" for the yellow totes using the retroreflective tape, you should probably use a camera + ring light.

I seem to recall reflective tape being used in 2010, but my memories from middle school may be deceiving me.

Pretty sure 2010 just had a black and white circular target but no retro reflective tape.
