Mentor Section

I'm a new mentor this year. Is there any kind of mentor section for asking questions. Things like strategy people use for gauging student competency, how to deal with students that are out of line in different situations, how to deal with other bad mentors.

I have a hundred more questions, but a lot of them I want answer specifically from other other mentors and how they dealt with certain situations.

If there is another website set up to help mentors (beside the FRC forum), I'm all ears.

Edit: These are all questions outside the actual competition.

The hypothetical situations when working with students go on forever. Considering that your team number is on your profile students may be watching you as you post (so spooky!). If you have questions on certain situations and you want to bring them to Delphi I don't mind, but just keep things vague... That is to say don't make it obvious who you are talking about. That being said I know how much I don't use the PM system on Delphi but if you find mentors willing to help with resolution or put some thoughts or input into a situation it might be wise to keep it on the PM system.

We don't tell new mentors about the Mentor VIP Adults Only Lounge, you'll get your key if we approve. We have leather couches, flat screens, and free corndogs in there.

Geeze, why not tell him about the hot fudge sundae bar while you're at it?

On the real: NEMO (the Non-Engineering Mentor Organization) has a forum that discusses similar topics. You can join NEMO (and they'll add you to the list for the hidden forum on CD) at http://firstnemo.org.

I also sent you a PM with some more information.

Re: Mentor Section

I will add this piece of advice: Talk to people who coach at the school/schools where you mentor. A lot of advice (like assessing competence) is pretty FIRST specific, but a lot of dealing with students being out of line, or adults being out of line, is stuff that coaches of any sports team or activity have to deal with.
