Animations at Regionals?

So far as I've heard (and I've talked to the guy who's been stuck with managing the Manchester regional) the animations have yet to arrive to be shown and judged this weekend at Manchester. The people organizing the regional were told to reserve room for the judging... and that's it.

Has anyone heard about the state of things for other regionals? Are we really gonna get to judge each other?

And, I'm assuming the judging would take place on Friday... if it's Thursday I hope I find out before I go to school tomorrow...

For me, animating is not a career goal. It's not a hobby, either. It's being awake at 5 am at BAE wondering why my hand is self-intersecting, and who the heck X-ref'ed my screwdriver; that's what it is.

Does everybody get to vote or do all the people who worked on the animation or just the kids or just 1 kid from your animation team is elected to vote?
Are the animations being shown with or without credits (becuase while Autodesk may not take into consideration the credits the people at the regionals may get wowed by clever credits and it could sway the vote over a good animation that didn't really put too much thought into the credits)?
And lastly when are they showing them (please, please, please don't say during lunch. I don't know about any other animators but I am quite tired of the animation competition being treated like an afterthought)?

i think without credits

at st louis its was kinda jsut a random time like 10:30 on the qualifying day

our animation was DQed because the CDs were corrput or blank

PS i think its like a 100 point system or something to judge by

Animation judging did happen after all. Here's how it went, for those who've yet to go:

No credits are shown. The viewing screen was a TV; animations were never shown on the big screen.

According to the rulebook, animations are cycled all through Thursday, but our Pit Crew was busy on Thursday and never noticed whether this was done or not.

One student per team goes as a judge, on Friday. The time is pretty random, yes, and I don't think it was ever announced. Since people weren't all there at the same time, they ran two or three rounds of viewings for the student judges.

The scoring is out of 100 points, broken down into three categories (same as the honorable mentions at Nationals): Content (40pts), Creativity (40pts), and Technical (20pts).

You judge all the animations from your one of the five major regions. For example, team 103 won at Manchester, even though team 103 (or at least their robot) was nowhere near New Hampshire -- I believe they were in Virginia or New Jersey or thereabouts. (This seems stupid until you realize that there were maybe twenty animations in our entire region. If three per regional went on to nats, and there were no overlap of winning teams, that's 12-15 teams per region, which is almost all of them. Just goes to show that the Animation part is way too underpopular.)

Supposedly the scores become available immediately after the Saturday awards ceremony, but nobody there knew the score, and the website for the regional mentions every award BUT the one for Visualization. My team still doesn't know if we made the top 3 or not yet. Then again, we could have lost here but won at New York or something.

Blah.

BTW... they didn't seem to have culled out the DQ'ed teams from the lineup. For example, there was a 2-second bit of a robot with its parts spinning around, located where 69's animation was supposed to be. And some team used Tool's "Schism" for their theme, and (I am told) were subsequently DQ'ed, but not until after we'd had to judge it.

Just to clarify, our team (Cybersonics - 103) was not competing at any regionals this week, but we entered our animation, "Impact", at J&J, rather than the two other regionals we're attending (Chesapeake & Philadelphia). Since J&J is part of the same region/division as BAE, it was judged there and will also be judged at the other regionals that are in that region/division.

Thanks to everyone who voted for our team's animation up at BAE! Our Animation department and team are really really psyched!

We had MOE's animation at our regional but not Rush roboitcs who has shown it here but it was nowhere to be seen there. They were not pleased.
