Stacking?

I know that from Cleveland not many teams were stacking, i think only 3 or 4 were actualy able to make a stack in competition conditions.

What about the other regionals?

Was stacking seen in the elimination or qualification at the other regionals this past weekend?

At Granite Regional, there was only a couple times teams stacked, but they picked up a human player stack and added on to it. The highest stack was 6 high.

At St.Louis there was only 1 robot that stacked well. It was 868. They managed at least a 6 stack. The other teams either couldn't get their stackers to work or ended up knocking over the stack they were trying to add too. There were a few teams who could make 2 stacks, but that was about it.

ET had a great stacking bot at Buckeye but a couple of times it had trouble realeasing the stack so it could get points but it is definately a good bot to have in your alliance (thus it was the first bot picked) because it can get you alot of points!

Yes, this is what I saw at the Granite State Regional too.

There seemed to be about 25%-30% stackers...yet very few stacked....or even tried to stack!

Our robot (Team 811) is a stacker, and we also only "tried" to stack two times or so. One time, the stak we made did allow us to win the round though. (it was only a stack of two too)

I am quite surprised about this....

Might i add that in St. Louis team 538 took a stack of 3 and placed it on another for a stack of 4 without problems...

team 1024 did make a stack of two and we could go under the bar.

during practice we picked up 4 to stack on one but we ran into another teams mechanic who was fixing their bot on the field

At St. Louis, Team 16, Baxter, could stack, but didn't try very often if at all. But, they do have the ability to do that.

PS: Baxter, I would like to commend your driver on such good driving, that fast robot must have been very hard to control. It's to bad we couldn't have been partners.

I was watching the VCU regional, and it didn't seem like any bots tried to stack. I think I saw one bot (unsuccessfully) try to stack. Why was this? Why did some stacking bots not even attempt to do so?

I don't know, and our bot is a stacker!

We need to debrief our drive and strategy team....I think it had to do with the shear number of boxes present out there.....it was certainly something we didn't have when we practiced....we could not find stores with more than a couple and ended up with only 10 or so boxes.

I actually think stacking has great advantages....especially given the arge number of boxes.

I think the game just seemed to be "set-up" in the first 25 seconds, and so pushing was the operating procedure from then on.

Also, I'm not sure I saw many bots go under the bar.....we can do it, but i don't think we did more than once! (we seemed to want to "fight" our way over the ramp, even if it meant wasting tons of time getting jammed up on it.)

Ah...the tale of the tape!

our team was one of the only bots stacking in cleveland and we were probably the only one that could stack over 2 high and could go under the bar.

We can pick up 2 and put it on 2 or pick up 2 and put it on 1 or 1 on 2 or 1 on 1 or whaever we need to do...
We can pick up boxes in any orientation, and we even made a stack that was an 'odd stack' where it wasn't the normal orientation but instead on its side.

Stacking will be the thing we will see more of as the year goes on. At this point its obvious that alot of teams took the easy way out and just went for stack boxes, not that this is a bad strategy as the way first made the game this year it is possible for any team that can get a bot on the field to make an impact on the outcome of a match, if you can knock down stacks and you can move boxes you can come play with the big dogs.

But where the big scores come from is the stacking, if you can build a stack that makes it even easier because your human player stacks can be thrashed and you can still do stuff. If you can protect stacks thats even better. Finals will come down to 2 things, who can hit the top and who can protect a stack of atleast 4 if not more. But thats just my opinion.

I think as teams get to work with their bots more they will work out the kinks in the basic stuff and start playing with the stacking, but those that can already stack have a head start.

Team 213 Dirty Birds had one of the only ones at BAE, we stacked 6 high once 5 high twice and 4 twice. We protected stacks until the end and then dumped. Look for us at Nationals. We received the GM award for our efforts.

We can stack, not very quickly, but we did demonstrate it during the practice rounds, but we didn'thave a good chance to use it during actually competition. In the words of one of our engineers, "This game is not one of finesse." Stacking is cool, but defending is a whole lot easier and more popular.
