Re: 2015 New York City Regional

My previous post was a jibe about how the quality of the webcast reminded me of years past, when the webcasts were just beginning.

Like the 5-1/4" floppy, I don't necessarily miss them.

The ability to get (almost) real time data from competitions as they happen amazes the old me.

The new me has become impatient and decided to transfer my floppies to my iomega 100 MB Zip Drive if I can find the cables for my Timex Sinclair 1000.
WYSIWIG? What's WYSIWIG?

I still have 4 of those in my computer parts closet.

They're backups for the hundred or so ZIP disks I haven't yet transferred to other media.

Re: 2015 New York City Regional

NYC was won by the #6 Alliance!

RoboTigers from Long Island City, 1796, The Griffins from Londontown 1884, The Saunders Droid Factory from Yonkers 2344.

Loving this games outcomes and how scouting and alliance "meshing" is worth so much.

I was a scorer and scored that last match (from the VIP seating side of the red - aka winning - alliance). It was a close one! Loved the last second "get a tote on the platform!" move

Now I'm exhausted. Can I sleep for a week? Can't wait to score at CMP as well!!

The field had a really slow internet connection. I'd guess the Javits Center charged an arm and a leg for anything better. Most of the match results uploads are pretty big (they include some log data), so they failed often due to the slow speeds. The rankings uploads are much smaller, that's why they were going through regularly. I know that it seemed to work here and there, which is why the results came in chunks. Not much we could've done, sorry.

I want to say the webcast was on a different connection (I can't say for sure), but I doubt it was much better.

I posted a summary of what I saw fieldside as FTAA over on this thread.

Re: 2015 New York City Regional

Is there recorded match footage from this regional?

Also does anyone have pictures of 395, 743, 1155, 1660, or 2265's robots?

Well played, well played. Looks great. Can't wait to see you guys at FLR. If you're interested check out our release video but know that there will be two new features added on before/during FLR. How was 743 doing? It appears they picked you for elims.

I want to say the webcast was on a different connection (I can't say for sure), but I doubt it was much better.

I posted a summary of what I saw fieldside as FTAA over on this thread.
Can confirm Javits charges 2 arms, a leg, and a pinky toe for internet speeds acceptable for a sustainable stream and internet in general, even just for one connection drop at the entire event. We, in collaboration with NYC FIRST, tried our best to find a way to make the webcast work in the beginning but finally succumbed to their .27mbps upload speeds and NYC FIRST got it upgraded near the end of the event.
With that said would like to sincerely thank NYC FIRST for spending the large sum it cost to upgrade the line and allow us to stream at a viewable bitrate.

Our apologies for the poor quality the first two days, and the switch from ustream to twitch (since twitch allows you to set a bitrate so we could actually show something before we upgraded) and then the switch back to ustream (after we upgraded the speeds and Twitch decided to ban our channel because it was not gaming related...)
Both the field and the webcast were on the same connection. We hope near the end of the event the quality was much higher and we strive to continue to make the stream better from the beginning next year.

Does anyone know how MAR and NEFIRST stream events without having problems on Twitch because we are fairly upset with them right now.

Again thank you to everyone for your patience as we dealt with the problems and we hope you enjoyed watching Sundays matches.

MAR streams on YouTube, and cuts the event music out of the stream.

FRCtop25 and GameSense are on Twitch as well, so it might be worth dropping them a line.

The problem isn't the server, it's the "last mile". In this case they needed the JJ Center wireless to get to an internet connection to get to the video server.

And since the Center is very much for a profit place, $10 per kbyte is a good rate for them to charge. So sorry FIRST that you are a non profit, we are and we make good cash from internet usage.

[soapbox] [disclamer == Foster on a rant, skip down]
This is the next part of Network Neutrality, the ability to connect to the internet for a low price. I have a 4G Verizon device, it would stream one event per month, and I would hit my "unlimited cap". Some places *mariot cough cough* block my cell signal so I can't get out except at low data rate volume.

It's not a happy place, people want to be on the interwebtubes and local providers use that as a $$$ method.

The telcos / cable providers have given up some ground, but the last mile won't be given up without a fight. Because that's a lot of people that make TONS of cash on that connection.

[/soapbox]

Congrats to the teams at NYC. I know that our VEX events to talk to people from far away countries (looking at you Massachusetts) so China and the UK is huge!!

Did you cry? I did when I tossed mine , my life history as an "Uber Geek" in a trash pile. I had all of those, an my ability to run them in 1MB was great. Now 1114 robot picture is twice that size.
