Unconfirmed but rumor was if 1296 didn't get 2415 they had a two can grabber for another 2nd pick.
^truth^ and I think the roborio problem was a screw (too long) that went into the roboRio motherboard. They replaced the roboRio then had some re-imaging issues but got things working at the last minute. The 2415 guys were fun to work with, great under pressure.

Team 1710 won EI at World Champs in 2014 and so they had a wildcard that carried over to this season. That would have gone to us (1730). However the judges opted to do wildcard selection after other awards had been given out and 1710 ended up with two wildcards due to their Chairman's win. We won EI and so the first wildcard went to SWAT 1806 and the second went to 1777 Viking Robotics. Very grateful the judges made this call and allowed 1777 to attend World Champs for the first time.

That wasn't the judges decisions, that was the new Wildcard policy detailed this year in a blog post and in the manual.

The coolest part is that all 6 teams in the finals would have made it to champs even if we 1730 had won.
