Sharing Scouting data with other devices without internet

How I was going to do scouting was to have team members jot down notes and whatnot during the matches, and bring it down to a single person to input into a spreadsheet (because scrolling through a spreadsheet is faster than flipping through poorly scribbled notes in a binder).

The issue is that through this method, I suspect that my Head Scout will be constantly putting in values in the spreadsheet and as the coach I don't want to interfere with his data input when I want to pull up some info to strategize.
This can be possible with google sheets and an internet connection, but we won't have an internet connection (no hotspots allowed either).

What is one way to do this? Everything I've thought of required an internet connection or some type of network switch.

Re: Sharing Scouting data with other devices without internet

Our team had the same problems you are having so last year we switched to a electronic system. We designed an android app to use for scouting that then exports the data into an excel file. We then use bluetooth (usb as a backup) to move those files onto a computer and compile the data into a single spreadsheet.

We shared our system on chief delphi if you need any ideas and there are plenty of other similar systems that work as well.

I would love an electronic system, each member equipped with a tablet would make everything much easier.
However, we don't have the money to afford such a system.
Your system seems to be optimized for electronic means, but I will look into it.

Re: Sharing Scouting data with other devices without internet

Sounds like you're a bit between a rock and a hard place. There is no quick way to take non-electronic data (a.k.a. Paper) and convert it to electronic data (which is the easiest to analyze). It is NOT a good idea to dedicate someone to inputting written data into excel unless said student wants to, since doing so takes so much time, is tedious, and SOOOO boring. If you can only afford to use a written system, then what you need is an efficient way to sort every team's information for easy access later. One such method is containing a folder for each team in a box, ordered chronologically, so that all of a team's data is in one spot. But, this still involves a lot of paper. I would recommend using the same sheet of paper to scout multiple matches, that way each team's information only takes up 2-3 sheets of paper (which could be stapled together before the event so as to keep each team together). This will be one of the easiest ways to run through the scout's information later without too many shifting papers, if you can't afford an electronic system.

The spreadsheet part of our system works equally well for electronic and manual input if you want to look into it. I do remember the years when all we had was paper. It was very tedious but if you have someone who types really fast it isn't as bad. It may help to offer some sort of reward to whoever is willing to take shifts in inputting data (like dinner somewhere nice or something like that). To make it easier to input data, it is a good idea to keep the data scouted to a minimum. Figure out exactly what you and your drive team need to know and make it as simple as possible. Also set up your scouting sheets to make it as easy and as quick as possible for a person to read it and type it in (set it up in a table format).

If you want to try a digital scouting system but don't want to drop money on tablets, FRCscout.com works great on phones, even offline. I made a thread to talk about it already: http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=135218 but if you have any extra questions about frcscout.com, PM me.

Also, for entering in paper scouting data, try an MS Access database. It auto generate forms and if you link two computers with an ethernet chord, you can host a local server and someone can look at or analyze the data without stopping entry. This video might help.

Let me know if there is anyway I can help.

I saw your thread on FRCScout, I've made an account but the issue is that not everybody on the team owns a smart device, and that I found it quite difficult to enter data in using a phone (maybe I just have pudgy fingers). A very good tool and I love it, but it's just not what I'm looking for based on what I have. Maybe in the future the team can utilize it better than I tried.

Thanks for the input though
