Perhaps one of the NXT connector cables had become loose, and by swapping them you cleared the problem.

Also, we have found that metal debris (dust) in these connections can easilly cause loss of comms. This may have als been cleaned out by moving plugs.

so I recommend keeping any unused openings covered (with tape), and NEVER do cutting or filing with the electronics uncovered.

Kids eyeroll when I complain about uncovered electronics during metal working but you can only say it doesn't matter if you've NEVER had a sensor glitch.....

I've worked with several teams at competitions where sensor lockups have tied DIRECTLY back to debris discovered in those phone jacks.
