2015 Peachtree Regional

To all:

So glad we're on our way to the 2015 Peachtree Regional, coming up in Week 5!

We want to hear who's coming and thoughts about this year's prospects for the regional.

Also, a little plug:

At the Peachtree Regional, GeorgiaFIRST will be bringing back a new entertainment format (debuted at GSCR), called GameTime. Along with our traditional game announcers and emcees, we are introducing our analyst and commentator duo, Annika & Jerry!

If your team has a neat event or accomplishment you would like to discuss with our commentators, please fill out the form below.

Please note the following requirements:
- Each team can only submit one topic. This topic can be anything you want.
- Each team must submit a description of the topic or event that occurred. An in depth description will help us understand what the topic is about.
- Each team must submit a set of sample questions they would like to be asked. Note: We may choose to ask questions outside of the suggested questions, but we will let you know the questions before you speak.

Enter your teams submission to our link by March 24th and be included in a gift card drawing! Thanks for your support!

Re: 2015 Peachtree Regional

This year's competition is looking to be exciting! We've got 4 regional winning teams and an EI-winning team in attendance, so there's plenty of room for wildcards.

Re: 2015 Peachtree Regional

At this point I don't know if I will be making the trip to Atlanta this weekend, but some good friends of mine are with team 5632 The Asimovians and since they've had a lot of non-stop driving practice with a drive-kit that 1102 loaned them I would expect them to do very well for a first time rookie team.

Webcast anyone?

The Mad Rockers are hoping to improve on our less-than-spectacular showing at Bayou last weekend. We made a bunch of changes Thursday and spent all day Friday and Saturday chasing problems from them. Some kind of voodoo going on too, PWM cable from one lift Pot came out in 3 matches (we're bringing the hot glue gun to fix that problem), bent hinges (in a game with no defense? we've switched to a .250 pin and bushing), and how do you get a tote stuck in the chute (still scratching our heads on that one)?

Hoping for better mojo this weekend.

Re: 2015 Peachtree Regional

A group of team 108 members are on their way to Atlanta right now. We are very excited to go back to the Peachtree regional again; this time around with two other Motorola Solutions teams from Florida.

Hopefully we have all the kinks worked out and we are hoping that we get that robot up and running by mid day Thursday.

Peachtree Regional
It's hard to think of an event in Atlanta involving as many championship invites since the big show left the Georgia Dome. Five teams are packing potential wild card spots, opening the door for more Georgia teams than ever to be represented at Championship. Human player-fed machines will be in no short supply. 2974 won Orlando by making 3 fully capped 4 tote stacks by themselves. 1261, 1746, and 1319 all have great human player-fed machines that have previously built stacks of 5, fully capped. 343 and 4026 were both close to pulling of three tote autonomous modes back in week one, and have had four weeks to nail down their routines. No one in the state was able to match 1648's efficiency at stacking the landfill in the opening weekend, however they will have a hard battle to maintain their "best landfiller in GA" title against the likes of 4468. There are sleepers in the field as well. 4509 and the return of 1771 may turn a few heads their way, and watch out for the changes to 2415 has made since they took home gold as the final pick in alliance selection at Alamo.

These are some pretty cute predictions here. But...

The 2015 Peachtree Regional is shaping up to be the most exciting Georgia event since Championships was in town. Don’t believe us? Well, keeping reading.

1648, 2974, 1319, and 2415 have already competed in their respective events and are bringing some serious hardware (and banners) into the Peachtree Regional. Look for these teams to build on their first-event successes and create some mad stacks at Peachtree.

If history has taught us anything, having a regional win doesn’t mean much at Peachtree. 1261, 1746, 1683, 832, and 4189 had amazing performance at their first events. Between finalists, engineering inspiration awards, and many achievements in between, each one of these teams has a reason to be playing on Saturday afternoon.

But you know what? Even teams who are just hitting the field for the first time tend to make a big impact at Peachtree. 4509 and 1771 will both be hitting the field for the first time, and with the amount of talent on those teams, the question is not ‘if’ but ‘when’ these teams will hit their stride.

And the craziest part? This isn’t even the tip of the iceberg. Don’t lose sight of 108, who lead ‘The Blue Alliance’ to victory last year at this very regional. Keep an eye on 4026, who was one good line of code away from a 3-tote auto. Keep a watch for 343 and their supposed 3-tote auto.

With 66 teams at this massive regional and an event staff that ran a smooth regional in week 1, expect the Peachtree Regional to be nothing short of spectacular.

- Rotten Peach Alliance

Cool Re: 2015 Peachtree Regional

It is sink or swim time for Team #1319 (FLASH). They won the Georgia Southern Classic regional with Team 1648 in week one. It must have been a wake up call for #1319 FLASH because their robot will be changing a lot. With all the changes this morning, can they do it? I believe with their experience, they can!!

Re: 2015 Peachtree Regional

It is definitely going to be an exciting event this year with 10 rookie teams, 22 out of state teams, and 1 international team! I am very much looking forward to it being my first competition as a mentor with such an amazing group of volunteers making P'tree the smooth and exciting competition it always is!

SWIM baby SWIM!

No wake up call needed here. We always upgrade in between events whether we win them or not, this one is really no different. Constant Improvement is what we as mentors working with our students strive for.

I appreciate the vote of confidence in believing that we will make it work. Our 2nd practice match of 2 stacks of 5 with containers and a single 4 stack shows our potential.

Re: 2015 Peachtree Regional

Another year, another Peachtree Regional is done. This region is sending a grand total of 11 teams to championships, with winners of previous competitions, and Peachtree's winners, RAS, RCA, and EI award winners. That's a solid representation of southern USA teams at the championships.

Anyway, i wanted to share some thoughts and give some shoutouts for peachtree. First, some positive thoughts:

The second iteration of GameTime was even better than before, with some nice talks on strategic design, match and game strategy, and insights into gameplay. I'm hoping GameTime returns again.

The competition this year was great. This year's regional was deeper than it has been ever. Most teams that made eliminations had already played once before. Clearly, having 2 events in Georgia is making a difference in the level of play as the season goes on.

The full size practice field is one of those things that makes GA events great too. Other regionals can't provide more than a half of the field to practice on, and yet we have a full size field with most of the game pieces.

Now, let's go onto some things that I didn't particularly like:

The pit space
. Our individual pits were fine, but with a size of venue we had, why were all of the pits crammed into one corner? FIRST hosted 2 divisions + FLL and FTC pits in the size of venue we had (that's 200+teams). There was no reason to have essentially, the same overall pit space as the 42-team Southern Classic regional, and crowd 66 teams into that space when we have a venue that can handle much more. Southern Classic's venue was much smaller, yet much more comfortable. I felt crowded whenever i went from the stands to the pits.

The stands. The stands were pretty unimpressive. they were far from the field and were really low. The stands at southern classic were so much better. We need high risers for scouting and getting a good view of the action.

The pit announcer
was kind of annoying with his "robot robot" spiel, though it might have been because we were near the speaker. It got so bad that our pit mentor mandated the students to wear earplugs in the pit.

Also I realize we were wayyy of schedule thanks to Dean giving us an inspirational speech, but having only a 20 minute lunch break before we had to queue up in eliminations left us almost no time to even formulate a strategy and get a game plan in mind. Also, only 8 matches per team in quals was kind of a downer too, especially to teams who can only go to 1 event every year. Maybe our venue can handle 66 teams, but if our staff can't put 9 matches + per team, it may not be worth it to go above 60 teams.

Anyway, let's not bog down on the negatives too much. I want to give some shoutouts to:

4468: Your team has grown so much in the last 2 years, and it's great to see you guys finally make it not only to the eliminations, but to move onto the finals. I'm so glad you will be coming to worlds. I'm hoping we'll be in the same subdivision! Well deserved finalist medal and EI!

4509 We ended up on the same alliance together again, but we got knocked out in quarters again. Your teams designs are always creative and unique, and continue to inspire me. Hopefully we can figure out the voodoo preventing us from advancing in elims next year.

Anyways, we may see you again next year at Peachtree!
