Off site: Your favorite forum software
Way off topic, but I've decided I want to do a forum on people that have finished the Great Loop, the trip that I'm on. I'm spamming you since most of you travel the inter-webs and hit other forums.
I'm looking for your favorite Forum Software. My favorite boat place runs Kunena, but some of my favorites run vBulletin (like CD and the VEX forums) I'm looking for ease of use by the computer stupid. Which sites do you go to that have easy to use software? Since I speak fluent PHP (and yet I have to look at the hand tattoos that says Red Alliance / Blue Alliance) I want something along those lines. Thanks, sorry for dragging you away from Champs info. Thanks! |

Re: Off site: Your favorite forum software
I frequent two forums that used to use the same software as this one....but they both upgraded to newer stuff. One stuck with the same brand, the other switched to XenForo. I like the XenForo much better, it seems to have fewer bugs, and fewer "stupid" features.
I'm surprised CD is still using this antique software. I don't mind, since I'm real familiar with it, but I've heard rumors that it's not very secure these days. Maybe those rumors were started by folks who sell replacement software? ![]() |

Re: Off site: Your favorite forum software
Could just be the way it's configured...but the forum at bangshift.com has been a mess since it was upgraded to the new version of vBulletin. I can't remember all the specifics...but attachments are a mess, how you find which threads you've read or replied to seems to be a big mystery now, it doesn't automatically mark where you left off reading after your last visit. I know that it's recieved a bunch of complaints, lots of work with someone from vbulletin to try to fix things, some of which have been fixed, others seem to just not be fixable.
I'm not impressed at all. The xenforo one I'm on is HAMB, it has a few little problems that haven't been fixed but generally works well. Attachments are easy to deal with, although it also seems to be missing the thing about automatically remembering where I last read. I don't know what's around for free, there may be some good things, but I don't seem to be on many forums these days. One seems to be done with WordPress, and it's not very easy to use. Most of the world seems to have moved to facebook or something ![]() |

Re: Off site: Your favorite forum software
I like vBulletin and like the features. I'm on a few other places that have Wordpress and Joomla based forums and they are a pain to use.
Not keeping track of what I've read is a real deal breaker since people won't be there every day. XenForo has a blog capability in it and I'm leaning that way. Thanks for your input. |
