Robot Operating System. I don't know much about it myself; I leave that to programmers who deal with it.
That being said, the one time I built a robot with ROS running it, pulling the laptop out to tweak the code was a little bit of a pain... |

ROS (Robot Operating System) is set of open-source libraries and tools that provide functionality often used on robotics systems. It was created by the Stanford Artificial Intelligence Laboratory and the robotics company Willow Garage.
It's used very heavily in academia and to a somewhat lesser extent in industry, but it's pretty widespread and has been used to create everything from robot submarines to the Robonaut 2 robot on the International Space Station. |
