I believe in intuition and inspiration. Imagination is more important than knowledge. For knowledge is limited, whereas imagination embraces the entire world, stimulating progress, giving birth to evolution. It is, strictly speaking, a real factor in scientific research.

Re: Has there ever been a fight at compeition?

At Crossroads in qualifying match #52, our team had a drop of power to our router (intermittent wiring issue that should have been caught but plagued us through several matches, you can see the response our human player had) that caused our router to reset resulting in a dead robot for about 20 seconds or so while we had the ball. Dead ball was called and another ball entered play. When our robot came back online the ball needed to be cleared, they rushed a shot at the high goal and missed low. The referee was telling them that they just needed to clear the ball from the field, so they picked the ball up went to the side to just shoot it out of bounds and nearly shot one of the field refs in the face. Our robot uses a leverage plate with a lot of bungee cord tension to hit the ball from below so it makes quite the THWAP when it shoots the ball. There was a lot of confusion and the head ref directed the ball to be put back on the field, which we just barely shot in the high goal before the end of the match.

I must say, they were definitely not aiming at the ref, just trying to clear the ball. The response of the ref as the robot is preparing to launch the ball is funny now to watch, but I cannot see how anybody else would react differently. These volunteers definitely put themselves "in the line of fire" and I respect them for that.

It wasn't anything big but its now a pun when it comes to referencing that team (which by the way is one of the most respected teams in FRC). But again it was a few young students starting it all.
Championships in 2012 right before Einstein was horrendous for me as a volunteer as I was in a crowd control/entry position for those with wristbands. I'm not sure if you saw another instance of mentors/parents arguing with a volunteer if you saw another volunteer and I trying to explain the seats they were in were reserved for those with wristbands which was why they were taped off and we had a team that hadn't been seated yet. I haven't been back since that year (not because of this incident but due to work obligations) so I do not know if they adjusted how this is done to make it less stressful for everyone.

Quite a bit has been done, especially this year. After the 2012 incidents with the field, security was stepped up around the field - no more volunteer gatekeepers, it's now handled by event staff and arena security.

Also, with fewer awards at the Einstein level (and more on divisions), there are NO student wristband seats on the floor anymore. The one exception is a Mascot area (?? not sure why, I don't think that'll be back next year) and for the FRC CCA winner (and its FLL/FTC counterparts).

i have never seen one at one of my FRC competitions but when i volunteered at an FLL regional i had a bunch of mentor and parents yelling at me about the score being wrong. most of them were wrong but we still had to go back and check every team score.

Not sure if this is universal, but in MN, the scoring sheet is signed by the ref and a student and 'by definition' when the student signs the sheet, the missions accomplished as marked stand. The score sheet is data entered TWICE into the excellent software (which is not used universally everywhere) by two different volunteers and if the data entry matches, the score is accepted, otherwise one data entry volunteer has to change their answer after resolving who is right.

I do know of one team that signed off, but later informed the ref that they got points for a mission they did not accomplish and their score was lowered. I think this helped them earn an award from the judges who heard the story at lunch time.

I know when I did Vex they did this at the SC state championship. It prevented several arguments (some by my own team).

Re: Has there ever been a fight at compeition?

I heard once that someone got punched in the face at CMP 2013 over a seat (Not surprising really). Like this is why I like being pit crew, we have an insta-bench where the drive team and two lucky volunteers can sit comfortably.
Oh yeah, and in 2014 the robot went crazy and tried to run me over. The assault wasn't aerial, but it was still assault.

Re: Has there ever been a fight at compeition?

Well at one of our districts this year we were thethering our robot and randomly autonomous was enabled and unfortunately, I was in front of the robot, yes I was injured, suffered some brusing on my shin, when we thether now, we put blocks under the robot if you consider this a fight, and in this case, the robot did win

Yep, there's been scuffles at a few events I've been to throughout the years, but nothing close to a full blown fight.

Re: Has there ever been a fight at compeition?

2014 was a bad year for yelling at refs because of how the gameplay worked. It didn't help that one of my team's best defensive strategies was ramming into our opponents at full speed (~16 fps that year- 3 CIM drive), which sometimes created unexpected situations

Also, I notice that I usually (students do it too) see these issues with parents/mentors; which I think shows that FIRST's attempts to indoctrinate us with Gracious Professionalism might be working

that being said, I dont remember ever seeing a full-blown fight
