Re: 971 CNC Router

Any chance of releasing the design notes or the CAD model? I'd particularly like to learn more about how you analyzed the different configurations and modified the design to get your desired rigidity.

Releasing something is definitely an option, I would have to look through the state of our documentation. Probably won't happen until after the season, as we have a lot of projects that we are working on right now.

Re: 971 CNC Router

To add to the fun, one of our mentors put together a video of the build process.

Great job guys, very impressive. What kind of spindle/router did you use?

Re: 971 CNC Router

Very impressive!

Could you share what you use for hardware and software on the control side?

Thanks for sharing!

We are using a 3HP, ADES70, 24,000 RPM Electric Spindle from here.

We are running AMC motor controllers and brushed motors with USDigital encoders for hardware, the software is LinuxCNC.

Not that we can tell, but it is still relatively new. The belts shouldn't stretch, but if they do we can re-tension them.

Do you mind elaborating on why you aren't using steppers? It's really awesome that you're going out of your way to develop your own machines and this is one of the most interesting aspects of it.

Cause we can? We are able to hold some very tight tolerances and detect following errors the way we are currently doing it. This would be harder with steppers, and we would have less control over what is going on.

We are using mesanet boards with linuxcnc to interface with the AMC drives and encoders.
