FiM District Event Analysis from 2015

With today being the day of 2nd event registration and having registered already for our events I think I can now post this in confidence.

So at the end of the year 2014 I had a question burning on my brain: Are all districts equal in their level of competition? And if not, how should we approach this as a team? Go for the heavily competitive events to have better partners during qualification rounds or go for the less competitive events so we have a higher likelihood of reaching the playoffs?

I looked at each event at the end of 2013 and 2014 looking specifically at the teams who made the Michigan State Championship (MSC). Turned out the distribution was not even and not even close. So I did this for 2015 as well (ATTACHED).

To read the attached image, the green blocks are in the top 64 teams at the end of the season (post-MSC). The yellow blocks are those in the Top 38 (I forget why I made that particular distinction). Considering the fact that a playoff spot is a playoff spot regardless of the district, this means that last year at the Howell District event it was VERY hard for a mediocre robot to make it far into the playoffs. Meanwhile at Lansing this implied that it was easier for a mediocre robot to make it into the playoffs, no?

So for teams with the means and ability to choose what districts they want to go to, should they go for events with high levels of competition or low levels?

Thoughts into this would be appreciated. Side note, our team could not participate in our home event due to a conflict with final exams. So we signed up for Southfield and East Kentwood. See you teams there!
